I know there are options for this - Sonoff TH16, shelly thermometer but they can become quite pricey if being deployed in mulitple rooms.

Has anyone deployed successfully something cheaper using an esp8266 or similar? Would appreciate some info as to what works and doesnt?

Thanks
Mike

It's not going to be a lot cheaper, but you can save some money I guess... I would suggest using something like a D1 mini with either a DHT11 (Cheaper) or DHT22 (More accurate but double the price).

Then you would also need a small case and a power supply as well as some wiring and programming skills.

I have done something similar, but I had the components lying around.

I'm using the Xaomi LYWSxxxxx thermometer with HA. It does the job but bluetooth range can be an issue if your PI (in my case) is too far from the device. I integrate using the low energy monitor.

I have 4 x DS18B20 temp probes running off of a single i/o pin of an ESP8266. Working great. I'm not sure what the max number of probes before the little processor starts to battle...

Cheap as chips with probes less than R30 each, a 4k7 resistor, an ESP8266 at about R40 each from BangGood (if buying 10 at a time) and some cable to connect the probes. I use an old cellphone charger to power it.

Program it in HA using ESPHome.
