Hi

I have a small 2000W invertor generator that I use during power-cuts and load shedding to power a couple important things...like Xbox, TV and dsl router :)

I have an dog kennel that houses the generator quite nicely and it does help reducing the noise, but would like to see what I can do on the cheap to try suppress the noise even more as I am in a complex and want to keep the noise to a minimum.

A colleague suggested egg cartons, but I will be eating eggs for the next 10 years to get enough to cover the inside walls of the kennel.

Anybody have any ideas on what I can use and where I can get it quite easily to put on the inside walls of the kennel to help suppress the noise.

Thanks

Line the inside of the kennel with neoprene. Make it 3 or 4 layers. This is what I was going to do when I bought my generator., a friend of mine turned a wendy house behind his house into a makeshift recording studio for his kids and used it to deafen the sound. It works wonders.

I then realised that both my neighbours have their generators running outside so I just thought fsck it! :p

edit: forgot he first lined the walls with styropfoam sheets

Think Pink or any similar product also works and it's flame retarded (um yes, lol retardant) if things go south. You should be able to pick up a roll for a couple hundred bucks.

Styrofoam was a suggestion made to me. Do you know who sells this, Builders?

I actually have some IsoTherm leftover when I insulated my ceilings.

Maybe a combination of the Styrofoam first and then the insulation over the top might offer the best cheap solution.

Thanks

No idea.

I was going to buy the sheet from someone on gumtree here in CT, but I see you're in JHB. Check the classifieds over there. The sheets are only like 10 or 20 bucks each IIRC

I know it does not help the OP but in CT you can get from Aerothane, dirt cheap and they cut to any size/thickness you need.

Used to get custom cuts for my marine tanks and sumps.

I would sandwich the isotherm in between the kennel and the styrofoam - then you have a neat internal finish as well and should be super silent.

If you haven't already, you should fit a couple of fans to move the air through to prevent the thing from becoming a hot box.

Just turn up the volume on the TV - you wont hear a thing.

Be like my neighbor and have a **** off large generator that sounds like a Spar truck running.
In fact, he owns a spar so I wouldn't be surprised if it's not one of those big-ass trucks.

So we get load shed as his Boeing starts up.
