What motherboard model (very basic) I need to order to build a NAS sever.
AMD or Intel, assume IDE hdds for that matter.
In addition what reputable online store offers cheaper options?
Many thanks

Why not just buy a NAS box. The Western Digital My Book Live is quite good bang for buck. Otherwise you can also go the HP Microserver route. The server is not that expensive, the problems are the prices of hard drives these days... eish...
Bought a 4TB WD Red drive last week from takealot, cost more than the HP Microserver itself

And now that the drive is here it is a R100 cheaper than I paid for it last week :p

I think IDE drives were phased out during the last ice age. :D SATA drives will do fine though.

You can use about any motherboard, just make sure it has enough SATA ports but the cheaper ones generally have a maximum of 4 ports. It really depends how many disks you want to add to your NAS, it may be better to get a PCI-e SAS controller for the disks if you plan on having more than 4 disks, you can pick them up for peanuts on Ebay (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LSI-LOGIC-S...sk_Controllers_RAID_Cards&hash=item27dfeb9956).
