I'm looking for a cheap phone to use with my laptop to connect to GPRS. At the moment I'm using a Virgin prepaid sim card for GPRS, but my cellphone is on Vodacom, so I have to switch simcards everytime I want to use it.

Not looking for anything fancy, just something that can connect with a data cable to my laptop and get me connected.

Any suggestions?

Cheapest GRPS/EDGE phone is the Motorola V360, you can pick it up for between R800-R900.

Very good for laptop use because it charges through a standard mini-USB cable so you don't have to carry a charger around.

about a year or so ago I bought a Motorola C550 from cash converters to use as a dedicated gprs modem. I paid about R600 for it. I'm sure you will be able to find one now for under R500 it also uses a normal mini-usb cable which is easy to find.

PM me if you need the USB drivers, they don't come with the phone. You usually have to by the Motorola PC software to get the drivers.

Id just go a little bit higher and go a and EDGE enabled phone or even 3G, theres a few cheap ones around.

Check for a old 6680, Mot E1000, couple Samsungs have edge, SE V600 and V800.

Well Incredible Connection had a special on Motorola V360 a while ago (29March to 1April on the pamphlet) for R349, But was subject to a 4U starter pack at R199 so that would have been around R550 *and then its a new phone*

The Motorola V360 is currently on special at MTN - R29 per month on MyCall 100 . CLI and itemised billing optional extra. Saw the add in Business Day today.

This is an EDGE class 10 phone, so on a multithreaded download you can get up to 236 kbits/sec provided the tower is also enabled for class 10.

But I would take JK8's advice into consideration. The first 3G Nokia that came out was the 6630 AFAIK. See if you can get one at Cash Converters 2nd hand or in Junk Mail or Cape Ads maybe.

A second hand 3G only data card would be quite cheap now. Try and get someone wanting to upgrade to HSDPA.

maybe V3G can source and old 3G only card for you....for cheap

Hi Guys,

I have been trying to connect to the internet using my 3G Nokia 6280. problem is that i can't view a thing, its make the connection and when i ping it then it shows there is a connection. Whn i open internet explorer it says (my favorite) page cannot be displayed.

What should i do?

Darren2050 - have you set the APN? If you don't use Nokia's Data Suite, you need to set it manually; with the data suite select Vodacom/MTN or set manually. "internet" should work for both MTN and Vodacom. VirginMobile is a bit tricky; see the VM sticky.
