where and how can I get cheap phones without having so sign a contract?

I'm not interested in any gadgetry, games, photos, 3G, ..., I just need to talk and send/receive SMS. All I can find are phones at R700+ at the usual suspects (Vodashop,..) but I'm looking at something in the R300-400 range, and it shouldn't be a used phone (often the battery is the weak point there).

Hey, MTN has really cheap prepaid phones.

ZTE - R199
Nokia 1200 - R229

Basic features, phones and SMS'ses. Available from Pep, CNA, Ackermans, American Swiss, etc.

Hope this helps.

Agreed on the Nokia 1200, a basic phone, but a good and solid phone.

Only drawback is that the paint covering the keyboard will peel off after long use, but by then you should have memorized the keyboard layout.

Mine died due to seawater ingress :(

I'm looking for another phone, but with GPRS functionality atm...

ZTE 201, a very cheap nasty phone. Not a phone that I would buy.

Nokia 1208 is R329 at Vodashops. Includes prepaid SIM with R25, but you don't have to use that.
