My son asked me to buy him a PS3 and I am just wondering if anybody knows a place where I can get it (brand new) for less than usual retail price. And I'd like to know if it's suitable for a 7-year-old

Well the best place would be game man they the cheapest right now I think

Thank you. I just checked them and they have one that costs R2600 (refurbished bundle 80 gigs) and another that costs R3800 320 gigs... what is the difference between the two, besides the obvious 80 gigs and 320 gigs part... what's the benefit of either?

Don't get him a PS3 yet - he is too young. Rather get a PSP. Games are cheaper, as in way cheaper. He can also plug it into the TV screen and use it as a remote.

The refurbished units are the old style and thew 320gigs is the new slimeline. Unless your also looking for a Blu Ray player for home, go the PSP.

Sorry forgot to ad about my argument for the PSP, the games are more child friendly than their PS3 version. Reason why I plan to get my little geek at PSP for Christmas (he is turning 4 soon).

Thank you, he has the portable one already... And I also want in on the action :) ... I just need to know if there is a difference, in terms of playability, between the two options 80 gigs and 320 gigs...

When I have kids, and they turn 4 or 6, I'll give them sticks and balls, and make them play outside ...

Nothing wrong with you enjoying a PS3 yourself..
They are pretty good blu-ray players too..
As long as you select the games well it should be fine. My 3 yr old enjoys the odd go with rubadub (I think it's called - rubber ducks in the water, all on motion control). Improves eye hand coordination..

The old one (80gigs) lack HDMI 1.3 capability. It's also more prone to failure due to heat build up effects than the later slim design. Obviously the size is also different with the old version the larger unit. As for playability there are little difference if any.

The 80 GB can easily be upgraded to whatever size to get more storage by just changing the hard drive.

I have one of them old units which is fine for me but I will add the 320gigs slim before the end of the year.

The HDMI1.3 in the new unit is better if you plan to use the BluRay playing functionality connected to a HT system where the receiver/amplifier are able to directly decode DTS HD MA or Dolby True HD lossless sound which the best sound format available from BluRay on some disk titles with up to 8 discrete channels of surround sound. Both the version PS3's can do the coding in itself and transmit in LCPM codec over HDMI which is the only way the old unit can transmit the lossless sound to a capable receiver. Over the optical links you can only get DTS ES up to 7 discrete channels.

My recommendation would be to go for the new 320GB versions if budget allows.

The best deal I could find was this one PLAYSTATION 320G Killzone3 + Move Bundle @ R4099.00

Thank you, this is so helpful... you guys should start charging for these advices... totally awesome!

Since he already has the PSP, you can buy games on PSN on the PS3 and he can load a copy as well - its multi license. Its great for the cross device titles and you can lan against each other.

The reason why I'm getting little Geek as PSP and not a NDS. I often buy games on PSN and enjoy Peggle and the likes. You can also use the PSP as a remote for the PS3.

Were do you see it doesn't have HDMI 1.3? Not as far as i know. My old PS3 phat is 1.3b?

Sure I should have been more specific? The PS3 Slim have the full spec, the PS3 Phat not! Remember the spec was still not final when the PS3 was released so in reality its not the true 1.3 Spec.

Update: The PS3 now decodes both Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA internally (outputting it as L-PCM), but a hardware limitation prevents it from bit-streaming the advanced audio codecs to the receiver.

It has come to our attention that the Playstation 3 doesn’t support the most important feature of HDMI version 1.3, the ability to bit stream to your receiver the new advanced audio codecs (Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby TrueHD & DTS-HD Master Audio).
The PS3 only supports the “Deep Color” portion of the HDMI 1.3 spec. This is confirmed on page 21 the PS3’s own manual (see picture below), which can be found here. The main problem with this scenario is that only Dolby TrueHD can be decoded and sent as PCM via HDMI, while Blu-ray titles that have DTS-HD Master Audio (all Fox titles) cannot be decoded by the PS3 (it can only extract the legacy DTS “core” stream).
We feel SONY has really miss led everyone into thinking that the PS3 would be able to bit stream the new lossless audio codecs once the new HDMI 1.3 receivers come out. We feel that everyone that bought a PS3 thinking it fully supported HDMI 1.3 got ripped off, and we will continue to feel this way unless SONY can make it up to everyone by adding the ability to decode the full DTS-HD MA lossless stream in the console (then sent as PCM to receiver).

The difference is the old PS3 are not fully compliment with the full spec due to a limited hardware chip, Sii9132, which can decode and transmit DTS HD MA via LPCM due to Sony firmware but not transmit raw bitstream data for an external decoder like the Slim version can. The PS3 Slim use the Sii9134 chip.

Slowly, ever so slowly we're beginning to learn about the internal differences between Sony's new PS3 Slim and its chubby ancestry. We already knew that it supported BraviaLink while talk of "faster gaming" was introduced (suspiciously) yesterday; something that remains very much in doubt until we can confirm. Now we hear that the fatboy gone slim supports Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio bitstream output to your receiver. Hear that audio nerds? Bitstream. See the HDMI chip on previous generations of the PS3 didn't support bitstream output of the new(ish) high def codecs like Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD MA. As such, the PS3 had to decode it internally before sending it over to your receiver via LPCM. A process that could garble the lossless audio depending on your setup. Even though the vast majority of people will never notice the difference (or even care), PS3 Slim owners can still kick back in smug satisfaction each time the TrueHD or DTS-HD MA indicators light-up on their receivers.

one of my friends says he got a ps1 for his 2nd birthday and has become a hardcore gamer ever since then so therefore playing games when you young develops much needed future gaming skills quicker.

Thanks. So it only affects the audio in my understanding. This can be bypassed with the Optical Out?

I don't know if anyone mentioned this but I will also advise getting motion controller and motion controlled game or 3. Especially for young children. Not only do they find it more entertaining but it also helps then not becoming lazy fat basement zombies.

I know you looking at ps but I would normally also recommend WII as they have a wider range of game catering for young children.
