I've started advertising my car this week with the idea to get the new GTI. I'm in no rush though so if I don't get a buyer for my car, I'll be fine keeping with it so I'm not going to order a new car if I don't have a confirmed buyer for my current car.

So the problem is that if I do get a buyer, I'll be without a car from the day that I sell my car to the day that my new car arrives which could be up to 5 months if I'm unlucky. Are there any cheap rental options out there? The standard rental companies (Avis, etc.) charge about R5000 a month for an entry level deathtrap. The cheaper I can pay, the better so that if I can save up some money to add to the deposit that would be great.

Why not find a place to trade your car in for the one you want

What car are you selling? Can't you hold on to it until you get your new car?
Because I'll be ordering a custom build so it will have to be ordered from Germany.
If I sell it directly and I can get retail value or just under that, if I use the difference between the price and my car's settlement for a deposit, I can basically buy a new GTI with all the extras which includes a new service plan, new warranty, more power/torque and better fuel consumption, all for the same monthly instalment that I'm currently paying. The plan is to also include an unlimited extended warranty up to 5 years / 200000km and then actually drive the car for at least 5 years.

Dealerships however always screw you with the trade-in. Even if the car is in perfect condition with extras, their offer is always below the trade-in value.
In my case, the car is in perfect condition with low km and is still awesome to drive so if I don't sell it privately for close to retail value, I'm more than happy to keep driving it. If I do get a buyer though, I'd be stupid not to go for the upgrade which won't cost me anything extra.

Probably the old Gti :)
Yep, pretty much :)

Contact your Insurance Broker and maybe he did a good job and added car hire to your policy. You then go through that company at preferential rates.

I do have car hire on my policy, but it is only if I'm stranded due to an insurance claim (e.g. vehicle repairs, etc.). I didn't know I can take advantage of that in other instances like when selling my car. I'll send my brokers an email and find out.

All the best Viper , I hope this work out for you. Had it not been for the colour I would have bought the car from you. Sorry about that. My friend is getting a red Gti 7 DSG tomorrow which I will be test driving soon. I will tell you about it. Your car is well priced, should sell soon.

Try dollar thrifty . Always found them well priced and reliable.
