Cheap second hand 1D?

omw just delete this only saw now its mark 3

The 1DMk3 isnt a bad camera at all - mine has served me well and still gets regular use.

However… the ad is for a 1DMk3 but the photo is for the 1DsMk3. :confused: So which is it?

I was at a wedding last week, and I was chatting to a guy about cameras, and he proceeded to haul his old-faithful from his camerabag... a whole whopping 4MP 1DMK1... that thing, even in its old age, is still pretty impressive.

Which for some things might be better but the 1Dmk3 still has a lot going for it. I have both as backups and it's definitely a case of horses for courses.

That's probably a 1D Mk III. Things to consider;
It essentially has a built-in grip, which for a 7D would cost you another R2.2k on top of the R14k. price.
Weather sealing between the body and that grip will be better.
To my knowledge all 1D models bar the 1Dx come with the AC power adapter kit included, which is great for studio work and any situation where you know you don't need the mobility afforded by your batteries anyway. That's another R1.8k if you were to buy that separately for the 7D.
Comes with a two-battery equivalent by default, so that's another bonus in that assuming the pack supplied with the camera is still healthy, you have the equivalent of an extra battery included in the cost (so a ~R800 savings there).

In other words, assuming these 'extra features/accessories' are something you would want to get anyway, you ought to be adding another ~R5k on top of what a 7D would cost you.

The 1Ds Mk III in some ways 'better' than the 1D Mk III, others worse than both the 1D Mk III and 7D, but if it happens to be the non-s, what you gain;

* Some DoF narrowing assuming you want it, otherwise count this as something you lose (losing out on max DoF capability)
* ISO 50 setting, which can be useful under some circumstances
* 2fps more than the 7D, which again may/may not be of use
* DoF preview button in a more convenient location than on a 7D

What you lose;

* Video
* In-camera HDR (think the 7D has this, though I'm not certain) - one of those things some people may/may not want. Could be useful if using the camera for travel photos and shooting jpeg, since it affords greater in-camera control of the output without having to worry about processing bulky raw files when you get home/back to your hotel room
* Megapickles
* One stop greater native ISO range (12,800 vs 6,400)
* New-camera warranty and the assurance that all parts in the camera are new, not just 'recently serviced by X'

That very last part is the one that would be most important to me for so expensive an investment. It irks me whenever someone is selling something used and they keep raving about the camera being 'recently serviced by X', as if to justify asking more for it than anyone else. I for one don't care if it's been recently serviced, I want to know what parts have been replaced, so that I know whether or not the shutter and mirror mechanisms are at all likely to present problems in the near future.

As it is the 7D doesn't do in camera HDR, neither does the 1Dmk3 of course, but that raises another difference. The 7D only takes three AEB photos while the 1Dmk3 takes up to seven.

The 1D is built like a tank. If you want to beat a man to death and then take his photo then it is the obvious choice. :D

With Magic Lantern on its way for the 7D, one probably be able to take more bracketed shots, though you'll have to delve into the ML interface (which is quite easy to use these days at least) to access the function.
By the time it does arrive, though, there might as easily be a 7D replacement out that happens to support more bracketed shots, while not necessarily costing much more than the current 7D does. Who knows.
