Hey everybody,

I have a outside room which has no secuirity at all, probably sitting about 30 metres from my bedroom, it has 1 steel door & 3 windows which are about 50x50cm sitting together in a row.

I found my old 3410 nokia and looked online at how to make it a autodialer with using a relay, i was thinking of just adding a motion sensor & maybe throw in a siren aswell.

I also thought about putting a pc in the room with 2 of my webcams set up on a pc program with motion detection & then obviously adding internet for it to communicate to me. Only thing is if there's no internet there's no alarm which is a bit risky.

There arent alot of break ins in the area im staying but i am paranoid.

I am only moving in there soon so i want to try make a plan before, i was thinking of also getting a dog from the SPCA although im not sure how a dog from there would react to a criminal unless its a breed that has some good guarding characteristics.

Anybody out there with some good cost effective DIY setups ? Thank You : )

Blue LED at door indicating an activated alarm system.

Thanks man, ill add that to the list ! its pretty much just a temporary solution until i sell the equipment. I think the pc with webcams, the blue led , auto dialer with motion detector and a dog should do the trick, let me know if there's anything else i can add to the list.

A dog is not a temporary solution. What are your plans with the dog afterwards? Dogs purpose shouldn't be used solely for security.

Ellies has sensors and sirens in a set that you hook up to doors and windows. They are wireless but doesn't connect into alarm company.

Seriously don't get a dog if you only want it for security. The cheapest DIY solution is some string and a couple of empty cans.

Thank you for the advice but dont jump to conclusions assume im getting the dog temporarily solely for protection purposes. I love animals & i would train the dog while nurturing it as best as i can. I really want a dog but i cant have one in the current house im living in so getting a dog when i move would make me very happy and secuirity from the dog would be an advantage & it would mean that it doesnt have to stay in a *****ing cage & can roam freely around a big yard. You make it sound as if im going to get the dog temporarily and throw it away ? My word....

How much do you think such a system from ellies would cost ? Im not too bad with DIY projects so im also keen in building up something.

String with cans ? Thanks for the retarded advice lion.

Ill stick to using this forum for classifieds only from now on.

Stinting on security is the worst form of meanness because, in the end, it costs the dearest.

Just because its cheaper than a bought system doesnt mean its not going to work...

Got any friends that know electronics? Would you mind playing around with a solution?

Yeah i have a mate that will be able to help me, currently studying electronics..

You can add a GSM module to Paradox SP6000 alarm panels that will send you a text when the alarm is triggered, identifying the zone

This is fairly expensive (R3300 for the bits) since you need: alarm panel & keypad, transformer, battery, siren, the PCS250 gsm module, a pir detector or two

A cheapie way to do it is to use a 12 volt 1 amp power supply, battery, timer module, a pir detector, a very loud siren (35 watts makes a good ear-splitting sound), a receiver for switching it on and off, and a remote. This lot will cost under R 750

All these latter parts are easily available in CT, Jhb, PE and Durban from the same supplier

Similar to above but much more simpler , an arduino board and a PIR, and all the other required bits like siren, battery etc.

You can upgrade it as you go on with a GSM module ect.

Thanks Chris, ive got a 12volt 1amp (output) adapter, could i ask why i would need to put it on a timer though ? The house already has an alarm on the otherside but i would have to run a cable which will definitely be exposed though, was thinking i could get some sort of a wireless motion sensor to connect to the main alarm panel possibly.

Ill note down what you mentioned though & do some more research.

Lion thank you man, ill take a look at some arduino forums, should come right with a alarm setup from there.
