Rabbit was nonsense. VW USA being difficult. They finally reverted back to the correct "Golf" name that side.

The simple things like good aftermarket engine and transmission oils, air filter and plug wires can make a slight difference. Good tyres from a noted brand can also make a difference and not forgetting a free-flow exhaust + branches. That's as far as I would go on mods for any car unless you re-conning the engine then you can go for lighter pistons but try to keep the bore the same.
