So host1plus actually launched what I think is a Mweb based server and is now offering a VERY decent amount of recources for only $2 a month.

I think its mweb hosted but not too sure. They actually priced the same as the Eu and South America servers. I think I just might buy one and use it as a vpn server or something. I don't think you can go wrong with R20 a month service.

Ok this VPS is super cheap.

Looks like it is on OpenVZ, they use WHMCS for their client service area, and the hosting is on the Internet Solutions network, not M-Web.

Cool was very hard to trace since the IP was just not giving info but after a traceroute it looks to be IS indeed. I did some ping tests from Richards Bay KZN and it was giving me 29-30ms ping time. So I think its a VERY cheap VPS considering the amount of bandwidth you get and the hardware is also not that sucky for what you are actually paying.

A sad thing I saw in the control panel is that the bandwidth looks to be limited to 15Mbps up and down.

"If you are asking about the plans, from level 1 to level 5 they are limited to 15 15 20 20 and 30."

It is a $2 VPS in SA, do you really need more than 15Mbps?

I personally just using it for a nntp2nntp proxy, works great thus far, until my ISP shape that ip range too.

Lol true you can't even get a decent connection for $2 in SA let alone a server with 15Mbps connection and 1TB bandwidth.

You can do everything you can do on a normal vps, except for vpns and pptp/ppp tunnels ect. For that you have to pay extra $$$ to get support for that in the container.

OpenVZ definitely has it's limitations, but it also has it's advantages, eg. it runs directly on the host kernel, which means your Disk I/O ect is much faster.
 
Can anyone give me some feedback on how well the server performs? is it better than the average shared hosting?

I am looking for a cheap VPS. that i can use to experiment and possibly move my website and blog over.

Then also use it as a VPN. Thoughts? i am currently with elitehost. I know they have a VPS server for R200.

What is your level of knowledge concerning hosting? Do you know about SSH, firewalls, ports, commandline?

If you're familiar with working on a server-version of linux and know a decent amount about running your own server, then VPS-hosting might be a good option (if your site is low-traffic and just a "sitter" type of site, you could even use an OpenVS server).

If you're not familiar with running your own server, then don't give yourself the grief of having to manage one.

The learning curve can be quite steep to some, and for others coming from a shared-plan, the first thing some ask is, "where is the control panel?". Oh yes, you'll have to pay separately if you want CPanel.

Feel free to discuss your needs and you'll get helped along the way.
 
I am quite comfortable with linux and command line aka terminal. I'm a php dev. I just want to know if the op hosting company is good or should I stick with elite host for vps. Or any other recommendations. Just want a cheap vps to play with.

Hmmm, so I guess your options are now narrowed down to price mostly.

I wouldn't personally use a "very" cheap VPS, so my recommendation would be to at least spend about R75 or more a month on something decent.

Digital Ocean has some nice offers, but they're not local (if that's what you're looking for).
 
The OP hosting is actually not bad. It is however on OpenVZ so there is that to consider.

If you just want to run a web server or so, you can get it for $2 / month here in JHB. If you want to run a VPN or so, price will go up, as you need to buy that on a monthly cost extra.

Still, I have a person test leech VPS there, and suggested to a friend to run their TeamSpeak3 server there after WAGE got decommissioned, and they needed to move somewhere. I organized to get their current TS3 config moved and installed there and I haven't heard back about any issues with it from him, and I am sure I would if there were issues, no news = good news.

So I personally have a leech VPS on there, so move a lot of traffic.
Friend has a TS3 server there, so latency and packet loss sensitive.
We both happy with very different types of services on there.

$2/month VPS in SA :)
 
I've used Host1Plus - disk speeds a bit slow, but I get around 50Mbps UP/DOWN which I'm happy about :)
