Hi Guys

I know you are sick and tired of these modem questions.
I currently have a D-Link 2500U modem. I have a pc upstairs, but i am going to roam with my laptop in the 2nd bedroom upstairs or in the lounge downstair. So i need a wireless modem for the pc upstairs.
I don't have alot of money to spend, so i am looking for a decent cheap single port wireless modem that is ADSL+2 compatible. I would appreciate it if there is anything on the market especially in cape town or do you think a 2nd hand modem will be suffice.

Comments?
:D

You can always just hook the DSL-2500U onto an additional WiFi AP, which is what I've done in my home.

I'm not sure if anyone can just by from Scoop Distributions. Have a look at their and Uniterm Direct's webpages for WiFi AP's / ADSL + WiFI routers.
Both of them are located in Montague Gardens in Cpt.

Warning - wireless signals travels horizontally, therefore wireless signal might be rather poor on another level of your home. You might want to investigate a power line adapter…

Review: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1114 & http://www.microsoft.com/athome/setup/wirelesstips.aspx

As you have a D-Link device I would have suggested: http://www.dlink.ca/products/?pid=533; however it has been discontinued - therefore the alternative would be: http://www.netgear.com/products/home/powerline-and-coax/high-performance/XAVB5001.aspx

Let me know your budget or PM me should you want a Netgear product at a reasonable price.

need something simple

my laptop is a dell xps m1750

why won't a normal adsl wireless router not work properly?

- yes there is, but at a price - can offer you a 2nd hand wireless access point? or Netgear DG834G for R 755; provided supplier has stock and you collect.

Sorry bout this, I don't mean to go off topic but something interests me here.
who.is.michael, what exactly does this guy do ---> http://www.netgear.com/products/home/powerline-and-coax/high-performance/XAVB5001.aspx ? As far as I understand you plug it into power sockets and it works like a lan cable, so no need to run cables through the roof etc..? Cuz I need something like this.

Yes, as wireless signals travels in a straight line - coverage on a floor below or above are generally very poor, especially when concrete flooring is used in the premises.

Total loss of signal normally occurs when the access point is placed within close range of metal objects, burglar bars, other electronic equipment, etc. Unfortunately, most users place their wireless access points in close range of their computers (metal object).

When it becomes impractical or aesthetically objectionable to lay LAN cabling, powerline adapters are used; it converts your home’s electrical wiring into a carrier of the LAN connectivity. Therefore you can connect the distant unit (anywhere where there is an electrical outlet) to another access point and enjoy full Wi-Fi coverage of your premises.

This is however not always successful as the noise margins on your electrical wiring could potentially render this solution useless. Generally it becomes unfeasible / unworkable in three-phase electric power system environments, with older (noisy) electrical devices connected to it.

I have tried to state it as simple as possible; without the use of technical terms and jargon.

Should you require more information or pricing, feel free to PM me.

Regards

Michael
