Hey guys I got a buyer for my iphone 4 gonna let it go before it becomes obsolete,
Gonna upgrade to iphone 5 :D in December but need a cheapie to use for 3 months.
Looking at spending about R500-R1000 second hand or whatever.
I need the wifi hotspot feature so I can link my wifi iPad to it.
Any suggestions?

Shouldn't this be in the Android section?

Motorola defy is a decent phone. You can pick them up between 800 and 1000. Has hot spot and can run cm10 ics. I think I might have one at home. You can send me a pm on Tuesday to remind me when I'm back home.

how much are the android vodaphone 858 these days cause they have the hotspot feature?

AFAIK you can hotspot any android phone via airdroid. I could be wrong though.

My daughter was here from USA with her iPhone and used the vodaphone 858 as a hotspot for the iphone for 3 weeks with no problems at all.

You can make almost any Android phone do that if you are prepared to dig into its mysteries. here's how I did it on a Sony Ericsson X10 Mini back in 2010: http://clasqm.posterous.com/how-to-use-the-sony-ericsson-x10-mini-as-a-po

Here's the thing: for any other model, the procedure will be slightly different. You have to do the research. Don't expect to just flip an onscreen switch and have it work. At least for the low-cost models we are talking about here.

If the phone is running Froyo or higher it is just go to the WiFi settings look for tethering options and flick it on. Set the necessary password and name.

NECRO: What is currently the cheapest phone that do this?

NVM - just remembered I have a phone that can do this already.
