As a follow on to my previous post about vehicle financing, what are your views on the cheapest brand/model of 5 door hatchback to service and maintain?

Please no recommendations for Hyundai. I had an Accent a few years ago and the service I received from the Bellville head office service/repairs center includes many words that would get this post removed. Shocking, ridiculous and down right criminal are a few that come to mind.

I'm looking at models made between 2007 and 2009, Ford Focus, Toyota Yaris, etc. But 5 door only.

I will be following this thread with interest as I also would like to find out from people what the cheapest car to maintain is. It would be helpful i think if you give us your price range, mine is between R70 000 to R110000.

dont really know if there's such a thing as 'Cheap' to maintain - - - > a car is a car is a liability.

Generaly cars that fall in a certain price range annd category cost the same to maintain no matter the make, give or take, not gonna be ridiculously different in price.

when you gotta fork out you gotta fork out, no way to get around it. the only thing that could help is not servicing your car at a dealership...but then you dont have peace of mind especially if you dont know the peeps servicing your car, waraanties on parts etc. With a dealership you can take it back throw a tantrum and have everythin sorted (barring ofcourse the crappy dealerships, but theres always a few out there willing to go the extra mile for you, everything cant be perfect now can it)

My wife's picanto has been cheap to maintain so far ( 5 years old), but we get the car serviced at out local mechanic, much better service.

WELL so far my corolla has not cost me much. the only thing i have had to pay for is put in new break pads. toyota wanted to charge me R2000. i eventually bought the break pads myself and found a guy to put them in. in tottal it cost R500 buks. saved R1500.

Fiat Panda - 5 1/2 years old - 75,000 km - 3 services - average R800 at dealer; 1 set of new tyres. other than that, petrol

Best car I ever had - now being used happily by my 21 year old niece.

A Yaris would be reliable as hell. Those things never break down. With service plan, R900 per service. Out of service plan it should be around R1400.

some oke on another current thread got quoted R2400 for 75000km service.

Corolla hands down! Had mine for close on 6 years, the services costs max around 800 bucks and the car just keeps running. Oh, I had to replace my tires in that time .. and had to add water and some oil now and again :)
