So a friend of mine wants to get ADSL (only for surfing and email) and I told him I'll get some info for him. My question is - what or who is the easiest, cheapest at the moment? I've heard ramblings about Nashua and Mweb and the like, which sound good because it includes line rental and a free modem. My friend doesn't mind the whole contract thing or that the router is network locked. Do you still have to go through Telscum with these ISP's or what?

As always, any info is much appreciated :D

Hey Mr. Mephisto ;)

Use the ISP discussions next time, might get more longevity for your thread, since it's not as busy as ADSL discussions ;)

The thing is, with Nashua or a Network Locked router, although at inception you think it's "ok" to have a locked router, once the service levels drop and you are infuriated with bad service, then it's too late to make a switch, and you are bound on contract, which is an ouch.

I would suggest you either check out the www.do.co.za packages, which are the latest ADSL offers from Telkom, some packages have routers included on a "self install" option if I recall and basically this means you plug the router in at your pc and the wall socket and configure it.

It's not that hard and reading the router manual provides a step by step on how to do it, even a 7 year old that can read can do it :p

If you don't want to go through Telscum (which people ultimately don't have a choice in) I would suggest a WebAfrica DSL Complete package www.webafrica.co.za .

As with the do packages, they offer different packages and line speeds and you pay WebAfrica for the line and bandwidth and in turn, they pay Telscum, which sort of makes it easier in some respect. WebAfrica's support services is top notch and that's why I recommend them. Even for Novices it's a brilliant ISP to have.

You don't get a router from WebAfrica as far as I know, but routers cost anything from R400 these days and going to the nearest pc store is as easy as pie as well.

tera ;)

Ta for der info bru .......... only reason he doesn't mind the network locked thing is because he wants it as a business option and then a few months from now, he'll get a second phone line put in and do the usual ADSL thing. But of course I will check out webafrica and the do packages :D

(oh ja, and he can't afford a modem right now)

Mephisto... I got the Nashua option for my mom. R139 all inclusive. Billion wifi router free(valued at around R600). 12 month contract. Top ups Gigs R95 (which is a little costly but for email and some surfing 1Gb should be fine).

The only additional expense is the Telkom line rental at around +-R111. I have it too but I use an unlocked router I had before as 1Gb is not enough for me and I want local too so I use Telkom and Nashua with Route Sentry.

You place your order with Nashua and they sort the line out with Telkom. So no need for you to deal with them. If you do have problems though you need to realise that you contact Nashua but if it is a line issue they need to then get onto Telkom on your behalf.

You won't find cheaper at the moment....

Thanks for the info Lance ........ I was hoping someone that actually uses what I was asking about would answer ..... cool bru.
