Hi, guys. Does anybody know if ISPs hire out the ADSL line rental, even if you don't buy data from them? If so, which ones, and who is the cheapest?

Yeah, that's what I mean; sub-leasing from an ISP whom you don't buy data from. Who's the best/cheapest?

They are all within about R10 of each other... save yourself the trouble and either use the same ISP for both line+data or leave the line with Telkom.

My line is with Axxess, account with Openweb. Haven't had any issues.

I'm gonna sign up with Openweb, but sadly they don't lease the lines. Any suggestions??

Dude, re-read what everyone is telling you. Rent your line from Telkom.

standard disclaimers apply and all that ...

Currently it is not possible for a consumer or ISP to lease physical POTS/DSL lines from Telkom and instead Telkom requires consumers\clients (including businesses) to sign up for an analogue voice line rental which is a monthly charge for the copper on which this "line access deficit" problem creeps in (the copper infrastructure costs more than the rental and is recouped through voice and value added revenue). Once a subscriber has such a voice line a DSL (digital subscriber line) circuit can be added on as a value add for Telkom. The DSL circuit is available as a product on a wholesale basis or to consumers directly.

In essence ISPs (including as I understand it Telkom Internet when you bundle) are able to acquire the subscriber line at wholesale prices from Telkom - although they cannot (for goodness knows what reason) lease analogue lines (even at the actual access cost), but when ISPs do this Telkom is no longer responsible for first line customer support on the line and instead the ISP assumes responsibility for most support such as port resets etc ... There are several advantages to ISPs in having the DSL line migrated to them (including customer retention) and consequently there is value to be had in the ISPs offering bundles to customers and subsequently customers can find themselves enjoying saving. Moreover because ISPs are responsible for customer support on DSL lines provisioned to them they have the tools to perform that support and are able to improve their overall provisioning of support to their customers - ISPs can build better portals for their customers and save phone calls to Telkom's callcentres and the mental anguish to their customers that result there from.

However there is a really small margin of value that an ISP would be able to derive from offering a DSL circuit only product. Consequently if you are migrating your circuit to an ISP without it being a bundle you are unlikely to enjoy costs savings or an improvement in available customer support - you are likely to save a few rands in exchange for being tied into all sorts of problems when you want to sign up with a new ISP. This might change in time and there might be a business model for an ISP to offer circuit rental at similar pricing to Telkom and to offer great support but at the moment that isn't the case.

dont do it. you'll thank me later

Why does no one want their ISP to manage their line? It's purely a billing thing, it's not like the actual line changes.
