(not sure if i am in the right forum for this) my daughter just got a laptop and wants to get internet. she does not want to sign a contract with anyone so is looking for a pre-paid setup. do you guys/girls have any advice for her please. thanks.

Buy a 3G modem, and buy Prepaid Data bundles.

500mb is R189
1gig is R289

You can buy one month and skip the next. they load it on, and you use the data. But it only lasts for that current month (basically u have to use the data up within a time period)

Depending on you cellphone, you can simply buy a Data-cable for the cellphone and use the Cellphone as a modem.

If you really want prepaid. Buy Virgin Mobile Simcard, and Airtime. 50cents per meg for data. (Its total prepaid then)
But not sure how good Virgin Mobile's performance is. they only support GPRS and EDGE

thanks, i will tell her but you made me think now about the cellphone modem thingy cause we all got samsung e250 and it does say something about a modem, hmmm.

samsung e250 will work as a Modem yes.

You dailin almost like you would via a normal Dailup modem. But you don't pay per minute. You simply use up the data on your bundle, or your airtime etc.

do you need a cable or can you use bluetooth.
You can use bluetooth to connect as long as the PC supports it. In fact that would be the best way.

That Samsung supports EDGE, which is one rung up the ladder of network technologies, which starts at GPRS.

The order of speeds is as follows:

HSDPA: Up to 1.8 & up to 3.6Mbps (7.2 on MTN)
3G: Up to 384 Kbps
EDGE: Up to 236 Kbps
GPRS: Up to 85 Kbps

Networks differ in their speeds as well.

Virgin mobile GPRS is the slowest (they use Cell-C). Then comes Vodacom, with MTN the fastest for me.

Your location also may determine which of the above you are able to get and how close to the network 'fantasy' speeds you can come.

I would recommend grabbing a cheap starter pack (MTN are 41c @ Pick 'n Pay) and buying a cheap voucher (R15). Then exchange the credit into 10Mb data bundle and see if it is fast enough and how quickly you use it.

ok cool let me check it all out. thanks man. much appreciated guys.

we have my bluetooth connected to the laptop and we have got the internet dial-up option up but it asks for a user name and password, what do we put in there?

First get cell to access the internet on its own. Once that is done, use *99# as the dial string; cell number as username ; and blank password.

that was fast action. thanks i saw that 99 thingy. what do you mean by getting the cell to connect to the internet on its own.

ok i just waiting for my daughter to come back then we gonna try, will likely come on the forum again

The cell has a built-in browser. Once that thing can browse, half the battle is won already. Then the PC can just piggyback on those settings. If the internet on the cell isn't configured, then its difficult to figure out whether the PC or the cell's settings are preventing you from connecting.

incredible connection (corruption) has got a special on e220's atm...R1499

get that and a sim card...data bundles you can get for sub R150!

I think the best option you have is BT's Broabband. Please visit this site www.bt-net.co.uk. It has three options.
