Another option is to build a system around the AMD® Sempron™ 145 it cost about R300
Though AM3 only boards is becoming a bit harder to find.

A third option is to build a mini ITX around

intel innovation series 2500HN - HoultoN cost about R700 (mobo and dual core cpu onboard)

Celeron - agghh...no - dont do it!!

They probably just want a browser/email and something to open/edit a spreadsheet or doc file.
I doubt they are going to play Crysis 3 :)

IMO those dual core Pentiums are plenty strong.
I have seen Skyrim being played on it with a 5830 in high settings on full HD without a hitch.
(3Ghz dual core one)
The pentium's very underrated imo.

The Celeron's take me back on a memory trip.
The very first pc i ever owned was a Compaq with a Celeron 800Mhz about 12 years ago.
256mb Ram and 20gig hard drive.
I still started it up until a few years ago.
Back then paid R7500 for it with Windows ME on it.
Later upgraded to XP.

What died in the box exactly? there is no reason to get a new case , hard drive ect unless his hard drive is IDE.

You just need to get CPU, motherboard, RAM, if hard drive and DVD-ROM / CD-ROM is IDE you will need to get a converter or a new one that is SATA.

Cheapest Motherboard, CPU, ram:

Intel Celeron G555 - R557.00

MSI H61M-P31 (G3) - R498.00

Kingston ValueRam KVR1333D3N9/1G - R98.00

Total: R1153.00 + R75 (shipping) = R1228.00

or Transcend JM1333KLN-2G, JetRam, 2GB - R153.00

Total: R1208.00 + R75 (shipping) = R1283.00

Or you can look at http://www.zones.co.za/, R2299 for a whole Pc and keyboard and mouse, but they are in Durban not sure where you stay.

Cheapest build Possible:

Case: R245.00
Zalman T1
Product Page

PSU: R182.00
Thermaltake LitePower, 350w
Product Page

Motherboard: R498.00
MSI H61M-P31 (G3)
Product Page

CPU: R557.00
Intel Celeron G555

Ram: R98.00
Kingston ValueRam KVR1333D3N9/1G

Optical Drive: R171.00
LG GH24NS90, 24x SATA

Total: R1751.00 + R75 (shipping) = R1826.00
Total with 2GB of Ram: R1806.00 + R75 (shipping) = R1881.00

But like I said see what you can use from the current setup, such as PSU, case. You will have to replace the motherboard, ram and CPU of course due to incompatibilities from his current Pc.

I highly recommend the 2GB of ram over the 1GB.

Yes. That.. They go for like R1300. All you need, I'd think.

And a further benefit here is the full system warranty. Not just a component warranty that charge a troubleshooting fee or leave you up to that task.

(Though some suppliers will build a custom pc for you with a full system/fault diagnosing warranty that fall back to component warranties. This is why you should keep your build within the certain brands of that supplier and specifically ask your reseller that the basket of goods come from one supplier that also assemble the pc. The supplier usually ask very cheap for the assembly as well. Like R150 rand or something. I personally always urge clients to do this.)

Esquire perhaps? Not sure of their current stock position.

Awesome, thanks for all the info so far guys!

This HP Microserver for R1300, where would I get one?

Esquire - Durban & PE seem to have stock but the price is now R1,499 excl for the N40, TBH the 250GB HD that comes with is as slow as molasses for OS use - rather look at NomNom's suggestions.

there is about 12 units left of the N40L but already have 33 on back order,

We have already ordered 200 units of the new model N54L and will be delivered end of March
Pricing is going to be around R1899.00 excl or maybe even higher depending on the Rand/Dollar, we don’t have a definite pricing as yet.

It is pity they stopped producing the N40L as it was well priced and performs excellent as a point of sale workstation and media centre
From over 3000 units sold we had 2 units came back for RMA and 1 without the 250GB HDD(this we could not believe but took the resellers word and gave him a new one)

There is no more units to sell unless there is a cancellation of an order in the branches

Forgot to mention.
All above items is Corex sourced so ask your dealer that they buy it from them.
You could get some MSI products from Pinnalce but the Thermaltake chassis is not available there.
Some other very cheap cases with PSU's are the superchannels/yama's from Asbis. But they don't have MSI. They do have some good value ECS mobos though so you could ask you dealer about that.
Asbis also custom build pc's to your spec and give a one year warranty.
The same goes for Pinnacle.

Make sure that the supplier assemble it for you and make sure about the full system one year warranty.

I would go for:

Intel Celeron G555 2.7GHz @ R557
MSI H61M-P31 (G3) @ R498
Transcend JetRAM DDR3-1333 4GB @ R273
LG GH24NS90 DVD-RW @ R171
Thermaltake V2 w/ 350W @ R358
Total: R1857

That's straight from an online retailer, no dodging through suppliers and whatnot. Its cheap, the case will take a lot of damage and it's very efficient as well. That PSU's actually overkill considering what this is probably destined for. In fact, you could even go a completely different route with more or less the same capabilities:

Intel Atom D2700MUD @ R841
Transcend JetRAM SO-DIMM DDR3-1333 4GB @ R273
LG GH24NS90 DVD-RW @ R171
CFI 8989 ITX w/150W PSU @ R433
Total: R1718

Not a lot of money saved here, but it's more power-efficient and quieter too (less heat = less problems, everyone wins!). Either option will be pretty good for casual use. Putting Linux on there, or sticking with XP?

Dude, look closer at your picks that you've given to OP.
