Hi!

Currently on DSL384 and using the TelkomInternet ISP offering. The usual 3GB, but ofcourse they charge me per gig over that (I think it is something like R60/gig if you go over the cap).

Basically online at night and the evenings, but in the past couple of months I've been consuming 4-6GB in the month (yeah, I don't eat bandwidth like some people here :D). Anyway, so that R245 or whatever per month from telkom easily climbs up.

So, 2 things... I want to bump speed to DSL1024 and go with someone who has a 5GB account, with maybe the possibility of automagically added a gig to the cap if need be. Unshaped is fine for now, although I do use VPN on UDP often.

Who is recommended: webafrica, xdsl or axxess?

No they dont. They either let you go over (I regularly exceed 5-6gb per month without hassles) or they hard cap you. Telkom Internet also dont offer a a per gb excess and if they did r60 per gb would be less expensive than most.

Are you certain you require the unshaped? Shaped is cheaper and often does the trick.

EDIT - NB only Telkom can handle the line speed upgrade.

Oops... sorry, wrote that up late last night. I meant to say "shaped is fine for now". :)

Thing is, I used to get stopped dead in my tracks with telkom ISP when I hit the 3GB, but for the past few months it just easily goes over and I just see the result on the phone bill at the end of the month.

I don't mind a hard cap as long as there is an option to add a gig when I need it. At R269 per month from telkom for 3GB, if I go up to 5GB it really adds up fast, so right now the R290/month 5GB Webafrica option is looking good.

And, yeah, I know Telkom does the line upgrade, about to call them now and get the 1024 upgrade done and will probably only be able to drop the telkom ISP at the end of January. The whole lot seems to work out to R300 extra per month, but that is fine as I will cut costs elsewhere.

Will most like go with Webafrica as colleague raved about it this morning.

i did 22 gigs on telkom account last month and it only cost me R199, its a 2 gig, so i dunno why you get charged over that.

You can phone and cancel your telkom ISP immediately if you wanted, thats why you have to use it before you cancel.

Webafrica are a great ISP, good service, packages are good, so they a good choice.

Are you saying that when you exceed the 3gb softcap, Telkom charges you for each Gb you use over the 3Gb?

I find that hard to believe.

Will double check tonight, but I find it odd I don't get cut-off like I used to. Heck, I might be horribly confused. :D

Ouch, TelkomInternet doesnt charge per gig over the cap.

n00b alert? Indeed. :D

Sorry, my mistake. Turns out I was horribly misinformed. No extra billing, which I was surprised at as I always thought that given what was in the news earlier this year. I'll stick with old telkom sa for now due to this:

"This means that we are allowing unrestricted access beyond your threshold instead of simply curtailing the service. However, your service may be discontinued once the average usage for all subscribers has been reached. You will then be required to top-up your threshold to remain online."
