So what is the cheapest Visa credit card?

I've been hunting around and have found the following:

1. FNB:

The FNB Classic Credit Card at R28pm (R23 Credit Card Monthly Account Fee and R5 Credit Facility Service Fee). Problem is I earn more than R36,000 - R79,999 p.a they talk about, so will they decline it just because of that?

Next up from that is the FNB Gold Credit Card at R32pm (R24.50 Credit Card Monthly Account Fee and R7.50 Credit Facility Service Fee).

The FNB cards has an International ATM withdrawal fee of R28.00 + 1.61% of withdrawal value (which translates to a R44.10 if withdrawing R1000).

2. Woolworths:

The Woolworths Gold Credit Card is R26pm and International ATM withdrawal fee of R40.00. Their website also states International Currency Conversion Fee: 2.5% of Rand value of transaction. So does that mean I will pay R65 if withdrawing R1000?

NOTE: I have a VirginMoney Credit Card (MasterCard) with zero monthly fees and they have a R14 International ATM withdrawal fee and International Currency Conversion Fee of 2.75%, so a R1000 withdraw outside SA will cost R41.50. I want to go on a driving holiday in Namibia, with bit in Botswana, next year and obviously don't want to carry too much cash with me (for fuel purchases, many stations don't take debit or credit cards currently). I will use my VirginMoney CC where I can, but some ATMs might only accept Visa card I heard, so that's why the question.

Don't you have someone travelling with you that carries a Visa?

Thats how we do it on business trips anyway...just make sure there is at least one Mastercard & one Visa among all the people going. Bit of a mess to sort out who covered what later, but thats OK - better than being stuck in some god forsaken place.

As for earning more - I don't see a problem. Just keep insisting & it should be fine?

Currency conversion...all the cards have this even the high end ones so I wouldn't factor that in. Like 2-2.5% usually.

I'd grab the gold one...I don't see the extra 10 bucks killing you and the higher end cards tend to give less grief overseas. (e.g. They have less sensitive fraud levels etc). I'm sure others will say its a money making scheme though.

Thanks for the reply.

Of the other persons traveling with me one will have a Capitec card and the other will be 11 years old lol.

I'll try the cheapest FNB first and if that don't work, the gold one, sure the R44 extra per year won't kill me but I likely wont be using the card at all, overall will cost me R384 (gold) per for something I probably won't use, guess the feeless VirginMoney has spoiled me a bit lol...

I have one (as stated in the OP) and its a MasterCard, I'd gladly take a Visa one from them too if they had one...

Oh my mistake, I mostly use mine for savings purposes but I was under the impression that it was a VISA. And as spotted I didn't read your post properly.

Why so desperate for Visa?

Free is free.

More worryingly, why another credit card at all?

Also in the original post, he wants to travel to Botswana and he's heard that they only accept VISA some places.

If you want classic, they will give you classic. You can apply online and they will provide you with the option to select higher, you can choose to select the classic you want.

Does it matter what the fees are? Apply for the card a month or two ahead of time, pay three or four months worth of fees and cancel it when you return. Even if the option you get is R100 a month, then it will have cost you a total of R400 for the peace of mind. That's half a tank of fuel, and spread over four months.

True Colin, guess I can be less Scroogy.

BTW, my tank is full with R500 and that gives me over 600km...

I have mine with standard Bank it's effectively free, as I pay them a monthly fee of R105 for my elite cheque account along with multiple benefits like free withdrawing and depositing of cash etc during the month one of the benefits is a free credit card.

Could be an option depending on how much your banking currently costs you per month.

Standard Bank? *spit!*

- To do a Internet banking transfer is now R5.85, up from R5.35 (~9%)
- Debit card swiping is now R2.15, up from R2 (~8%)
- Drawing R500 from a SB ATM is R7.65, up from fixed R5.35 (~35%)
- Drawing R1400 from a SB ATM is R16, up from fixed R5.35 (~300%)

That's an excerpt from a mail I sent to Bruce Whitfield on 702s Moneyshow on 25 Feb 2009 when they claimed to have had miniscule below inflation increases, and it was discussed on air. My SB savings account statement proved otherwise to their statement. Changing the terms and whole structure of the product, their stupid reply to me with a suggestion I get a cheque account (which would have worked out cheaper than my transactions with the savings accounts new fees, but wasn't as little as I'd pay with Capitec) just cemented my transition to Capitec.

All they get from me now is the R8pm fee which keeps that account open and whatever profit they make from the airtime I buy from it (wonder when Capitec will get airtime buying on Internet Banking *sigh*).

I'd rather go FNB, they have not screwed me... yet...

In Africa Visa is king I also have a Virgin Mastercard and its always a pain to get money and I often have to borrow from someone else till I get to a bank that supports Mastercard. I keep saying I must get a Visa but I never do.
