Cheapest way to stay connected to data services - Namibia & Botswana

I will be taking a quick road trip to Namibia via Botswana this coming December, roughly 10 days in total. What is the best way (read: cheapest way) to keep connected to data services?

Roaming charges are just stoopidly expensive.

Do you have a tablet?

If so this is how I would do it. Turn mobile data off on phone. Buy a local prepaid SIM on entry of country and buy data. Insert SIM in tablet and make it a wifi hotspot. Link phone to this hotspot. You should still be able to receive calls (I think) and SMSs on phone and use data functions via wifi.

MTC in Namibia and Orange in Botswana should be good. However, depends on where in country you will be, dont expect superfast data speeds

I do have a tablet. Will look at this option.

I just need to stay in contact with people while I'm travelling.
