Checked my coverage.........

But it is not truly uncapped, it's an express uncapped. Has a 10 day rolling window.

I just checked with him and he is on their capped 5 Gig package for R570. The Screamer website does offer various uncapped packages which seem pretty good.

Axxess is the isp that advertises an uncapped package but it is in fact a 10 day rolling cap.

yup - the new coverage is online and it looks a lot better in Cape Town - especially the city bowl and the Southern Suburbs.

I am not sure how they compile these maps. I don't have coverage but I am literally only a couple a hundred of meters from the center of the nearest spot on the map.

What I don't understand - the area left of Liesbeek Parkway is pretty flat - why is the coverage maps so dodgy in shape? Or did Neotel decide to up the power on the towers and these spots are merely long distance spots from another tower - if you look at the picture I link to - right below the pin there is a spot coverage. But the radius of that spot is quite a bit less than 1.5km and it is flat land.... and everything to the left of Liesbeek parkway, lies on lower land...

My only conclusion is that Neotel upped the power on their towers to get a radius of more than 1.5 km. In fact for this map to make sense they are going for a tower radius of about 6km at this stage. And another very important thing - they don't have access to decent high-sites.

And this is demonstrated very clearly with the following picture:

I have drawn a circle and made a guesstimate of where their tower is. And it doesn't make any sense. It looks like they picked the lowest point in Rondebosch for placing their tower. It explains the funny coverage but for the life of me it doesn't make any sense. I think I will go hunt for their tower tomorrow and see this for myself.

The bad news is - they are without a doubt sacrificing signal quality for coverage.

Neotel White Areas Only, in Cape Peninsula
Just checked the latest map in CT, +80% of the former whites areas covered, black areas less than 20%. Neotel why is this so?

maybe because they are in high income areas?

I'm sure people can afford the R99 for Neotel, cheaper than Telkom. Like you say more money to be made there.

Uhm. And the fact that they started behind the boerewors gordyn in Cape Town with all the Afrikaans speaking people first should also provide a hint....

Luckily I think its got more to do with incompetent planning and market research than discrimination.

Think about it this way - most white people are still not covered :-)

I don't see the relevance of making this a political / racial thing...

However; if you understood how a network is built then it would make more sense.

Fair vs Excellent coverage

What do you think will fair vs excellent coverage mean for connection speeds?

WTF - just checked the maps and see I'm now out of Prime coverage ... ! I see Somerset West has got some awesome coverage now, will do another test with my device in the car this week.

But yesterday, while waiting for wifey to finish up in the library I noticed new hardware was installed at their high site - the building at busy corner, just a pity its 4 stories high.

I also got coverage now, will check it out and wait for the Neoflex data only service

Well, I'm back to having coverage like this. :(

It might be cause there's a geographical dip in the area. If I phone Neotel will they send someone to come and see what coverage I actully have? I live in a flat on the second floor of my complex. Couldn't that help with coverage...... I'm getting desperate here. :(

im in a dip and my signal is normally full. Granted im also only 2km from the neotel head-office.

i know u can build an external antenna - one of my friends recently did. whether that would actually do anything good in your case i dont know. the technology should not require hi-gain antennas to work but u do never know.

when i look at that map its definitely not a normal pattern, the green should be more circular as you get to the fall-out areas so something is messing it up in that white-spot.

Are the GSM stations in the area near the Neotel one and do you also get signal problems with mobiles?

[EDIT : Toxin whats your GPS coords? I wanted to see a topo map of your area but i cant find the names on that neotel map to get a position]
