so ppl have a problem with the AA, what do u guys suggest be done then? have whites in high positions whiles there are blacks who were not given the opp, before.

lets not be selfish here lets let the blacks enjoy abit of an advantage aswell but lets give it a time frame and than we can start operating normaly

People should be equal.

craigsa : Because he (most probably) managed to go to a good school, university and has his old-boy network/dad's contacts, etc to get him a job. He is massivly advantage at the expense of many black children. It will take many decades before the imbalance is sorted out. AA makes this timeframe shorter

To be equal? Or to be "more equal"?

Are you bitter?

So you are assuming I am white? But no, I have a job. Nor was I rejected because of my race. But I believe people should be equal for the country to move forward. Is that wrong?

Rejection should only be based on insufficient knowledge! Nothing else should matter! Why bring in "had better education", etc. etc.? If you can do the job, you get it! No matter what! With AA, it doesn't work that way...

It's absolutely right, exactly what the gvt is busy doing.

ettubrute : Because Apartheid isn't over yet. Yes, the laws changed 12 years ago, but the effects of those previous decades of aparthaid are still in full swing. And will take many, many decades to normalise SA. AA is a way to make this happen much sooner

How is favouring some races over others making all races equal?

That is the idea behind it but thats not what will happen. When you discriminate because of race it has effects on people. Both those who were discriminated against and those who were aided by the descrimination. AA, while trying to "normalise SA" is in fact setting it back by even more years.

You cannot achieve a healthy, equal society through discrimination, no matter how well-meaning it might be.

Agree icyrus! If I happen to be able to do a job better than the next man, why should he get it, because he happens to have a different skin colour? Only thing it does is that the company hiring him will spend more to get the same job done! Talk about screwed up economics!

About AA: It's either you'll neva get it or you are pretending not to get it.

icyrus : Your point does have some merit.

As to how AA makes people more equal -- White 1st time job seekers, whilst they dont have the massive advantage of the past, have some advantages that apartheid gave them (Or most of them rather) - wealthy parents, a good education, connections to get a job, etc. Sure, they will be disadvantaged at many of the bigger companies that are AA (Although getting a job is still easy. Many of my friends got into large companies that are AA without any hassel. But let us say for arguments sake, that it is more difficult for white people to get jobs in these companies).

1st time, Black, jobseekers have only this advantage, They do not have their parents connections, they do not have an old boys network. And many smaller companies (which make up the majority of SA companies) still prefer the pale male, and will not hire them

I think AA equalises everyone (Although a white person is still currently more advantaged). Over time, it will skew things, and is thus a temporary measure until things get straitened out. But understand that temporary does not mean 12 years. It means until the problem is solved
