Ok, so I just got back from the bank. Had to renew my bank card. I asked them to give me the card which would allow for international payments (Specifically for online gaming etc). I received one. It does not look like my older card, however I have no clue if it is the card I need. Which card is the one you need for online payments that should act as a credit card? Thanks

EDIT: The card does not have "Visa Electron" on it anyway, only has "VISA".

Look for a CVV number at the back of the card. If it's present you can use the card online. You will probably be able to, since it's a normal Visa branded card.

A Visa cheque card is for all intents and purposes the same as a credit card except it is linked directly to your cheque account and not a separate credit card account. You can use it anywhere that accepts Visa credit cards, even places that accept credit cards but don't accept debit cards. In fact most garages won't accept a Visa cheque card for payment because they treat it like a credit card.

Thanks for the replies. It has a silver bird on it.
It's an FNB card.

Does it hav your name or business name on the front?

No name or business name. Just the 16 digit number on the front, The shiny dove and "VISA" imprinted.

Then is probably just a normal debit card for point of sale purchases & ATM use... What you need to ask for is a Cheque card, it workds like a credit card but it's a debit card, so you can use it for online purchases... Some Consultants at the bank don't know the difference between a normal debit and a cheque card... The Cheque card comes with your name printed in the front and usually takes a day or two for them to order. The bank only keeps the normal generic debit cards in the branch, the cheque cards are ordered with you name on...

OH great... I explicitly told them what I needed. The woman helping me even contacted someone to confirm what she was giving me was right.
Sh*t like this really gets me going

That is like a CC, but linked to (normally) your cheque account ... no money, no payment. But it is underwritten by (in your case) VISA, so you can use it as a credit card. Been using one for about 8 years

I just had a look at the FNB site. The card I have looks almost exactly the same as their credit cards. Just doesn't have my name on it. Why is this card of mine "VISA" and not "VISA Electron"?

The same thing happened with my dad..he asked for a cheque card and told them he needs to use it for online purchases etc but the ended up giving a normal debit card.. it was ABSA btw

Do any of you actually know exactly what card he does, or are you assuming?

@dal2000 have you tried using the card yet? If the online sites definitely doesn't except it, then it's the wrong card. But just cause everyone gives their opinion about what the think it is, doesn't mean it's wrong.

If it doesn't say Visa Electron, then it's not, as simple as that :)

You have a VISA card which will work online

I have not used it yet. The site im going to use it on will only be back online later.

Not necessarily... I have seen some electron cards that just have the VISA logo, also some with Mastercard without the Maestro logo but only for electronic purchases and not online use...

I have a VISA card from bidvest. It's not a Visa electron card. On the back on the bottom, it says Electronic use only. This card definitely works online.

Electronic use only doesn't mean it doesn't work online. Electronic use only, means you cant make imprints of the card and then sign for it, like the really old fashioned credit card processing.

Are you not referring to the solo cards? AFAIK, the electron sign / name has to be present since it has it's limitations?

a friend told me that persiankitty.com would be back soon :D

Back on topic, as long as it has the 3 CSV digits at the back you should be able to shop online
