Cheque vs Debit cards

Also, since cheque cards are either Mastercard or Visa, you can use them to shop online.

I am with FNB, got a gold cheque account card recently with a chip, tried to buy online from Take2 and it didn't work? I guess I should try steam or something to confirm...

@ passive I also have a gold cheque card and PicknPay refused to let me draw money from them.

my cheque card needs a pin, its one of those chipped ones. I am almost certain all new cheque cards have this now

I just picked mine up, and it's not chipped. Odd, I thought it would be.

Cool - I already have a credit card, so I don't need it to shop online; the main benefit to me is that debit card purchases aren't included in my cheque account's fixed monthly fee, but cheque card purchases are. So it looks like there's no reason not to switch.

I also thought no fees when applying but it's not true. If you bank with say Standard Bank and the swipe machine is FNB there is still a R4 fee per transaction your paying so now your paying R140 a month + R4 every time you swipe. Which works out the same as using a debit card.

The only way to truly not pay anything is to use Credit Card.

Not so convinced about that one. Cheque cards don't involve any actual credit being granted. You can take your account into the negative with them, but thats the same for debit cards because the "credit" portion is built into the account not the card.

I know Std Bank cheque accounts by default do not allow you to push them into the negative. You have to apply for that.

Strangely though they do credit checks when issuing cheque cards.

After many years finally gave up on ABSA. Collected my cards from FNB yesterday and they have chips. Credit card is also protected with a PIN. Also the cheque card works fine for online purchases, it seems like it can also be linked to PayPal using the linked service from FNB.

About to spend thousands on new appliances etc. trying to figure out if it's better to pay from ABSA accounts or transfer my cash across to FNB first...

FNB you get E-bucks when you spend on the cards so rather transfer first.

Can you draw from till with your card?

I am due for new card mine is a bit worn, is it just me or does the cards not last as long as it used to?

I almost slapped someone the other day, it looked like she was taking out all her anger out on my card..

Some of these supermarket tellers go ape when trying to swipe your cards.
