Remember the Chevrolet Trailblazer? There's a new one
Remember the Chevrolet Trailblazer? Well, the US-based brand has just unveiled an all-new version at Auto Shanghai 2019 … and it’s decidedly different from the one you may remember.
Yes, from what we can tell, this new Trailblazer runs on one of Chevrolet’s new unibody crossover platforms, rather than the ladder-frame set-up used by the seven-seater model once offered here in South Africa. And reports suggest it will actually replace the smaller Trax offered in some markets.
Its styled rather more boldly than its forebear, too, drawing plenty of inspiration from the brand’s FNR-CarryAll concept. Up front, you’ll notice the stacked headlamp arrangement and the automaker’s signature dual-intake grille. Pictured here is a Redline version, which boasts black 17-inch wheels.
The brand has yet to reveal powertrain options for the new Trailblazer, nor any additional official images (for now, there's no indication of what the rear of the vehicle looks like, never mind its cabin).
Still, we guess that matters little since General Motors (and thus Chevrolet) pulled out of South Africa at the end of 2017 (with the Isuzu MU-X since stepping into Trailblazer’s shoes to take on the likes of the Toyota Fortuner, Ford Everest and Mitsubishi Pajero Sport).

The Chevy Trailblazer joins the Chevrolet portfolio in early 2020, and with this new entry Chevrolet offers customers one of the broadest lineups of crossovers and SUVs. Positioned between the Trax and Equinox, the 2021 Chevrolet Trailblazer will join the fast-growing small SUV segment.
"The Trailblazer's great design enables more personalization," said Steve Majoros, director of Chevrolet passenger car and crossover marketing. "Trailblazer is a continuation of the design language for Chevy's crossover family and extends our momentum into one of the industry's fastest-growing segments."
The Chevrolet Trailblazer will include an RS trim with standard two-tone roof that allows drivers to purchase a vehicle that reflects their lifestyle.
The Chevrolet Trailblazer's unique individuality is paired with standard active safety features including Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. It also offers optional Adaptive Cruise Control - Camera, Rear Park Assist and a High Definition Rear Vision Camera that provides additional assistance to customers while parking.
"These features deliver added confidence and peace of mind behind the wheel, helping drivers monitor the vehicle's surroundings and the driving environment with an available combination of camera, short-range radars and ultrasonic sensors," said Majoros.

Chevy impressed no one with the 2020 Chevrolet Blazer, sticking a legendary nameplate onto a crossover with the “presence of a bowl of cream of mushroom soup” as my colleague Jason accurately put it. “But perhaps the Trailblazer will be the real off-roader,” I hoped. Nope, the U.S. market Trailblazer looks just like the one shown in China earlier this year, which is to say: a Camaro face on a crossover body.
I’ll begin by saying that, as far as crossovers go, this thing doesn’t look bad. It’s aggressive and kinda chunky for a little crossover. That said, this is the RS trim, which comes with a standard two-tone paint scheme, so we’ll have to see how a basic, non-RS model looks before drawing any conclusions.
The new Trailblazer will slot between the stubby Trax and the Popular But Not Particularly Exciting Equinox, competing with vehicles like the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson. And maybe even the Ford Escape and Toyota Rav4—I’m not exactly sure, because crossover classification has gotten confusing.

It is not worthy of the Trailblazer name though, they should have given it a new name and reserved the Trailblazer name for some other time.

When the Trailblazer name left Chevrolet showrooms in 2009 it was replaced by the Traverse. Wednesday evening the Detroit automaker announced the name would be returning on a compact SUV to slot between the Trax and Equinox. That’s a full three sizes smaller than the current Traverse, and two sizes smaller than the Blazer. It is said to start “under $20,000" which undercuts the smaller Trax by at least $1300.
The new Trailblazer is powered by either a 1.2-liter or 1.3-liter three cylinder engine, both are turbocharged. The most powerful version will sport 155 horseponies. Front-wheel drive is standard, while all-wheel drive is optional. If you choose a 1.3 Turbo AWD model, it will be equipped with a new 9-speed automatic.

I Think The 2021 Chevy Trailblazer Has The Smallest Engine-To-Overall-Car Size Ratio Of Any Car You Can Buy In America
We’ve certainly had 1.2-liter cars in America, and still have them: the 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage has a 1.2-liter three-banger making 78 horsepower, in car that weighs 2,018 pounds. The Smart ForTwo only had a one-liter engine, but the gasoline one isn’t sold here anymore, Volkswagen’s smallest engine here is a 1.4-liter, even the Nissan Versa now comes with a 1.6-liter, and Ford no longer sells their nifty little one-liter three.
So I’m pretty sure that leaves the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer in a class of its own: a crossover with a 1.2-liter engine. It’s not like it’s that much smaller than its competitors, really, but it may be the most underpowered.
Honda’s CR-V, for example, is only 300cc bigger, but produces 190 HP compared to the Trailblazer’s (estimated) 137 HP. Now, 137 HP from a 1.2-liter engine is pretty good, in the right context—for example, a 2006 Scion xB makes 103 HP, but it’s only dragging around 2,425 pounds, giving each horse just 23.5 pounds to drag around.
On the 2021 base model Trailblazer LT FWD, the car weighs almost twice as much—4,189 pounds, meaning each of those 137 turbocharged ponies has to pull about 30.5 pounds.
