China can build that huge three Gorges dam and in comparison SA has built the Nelson Mandela bridge over some railway lines. Puts it in perspective.

With gas for cooking and heating, and a solar geyser, you should be able to get away with 2000 watts - depending of course on the inverter and batteries and the charge time.
