Hey Everyone

I have a choice of getting either a NETGEAR DG834G or BILLION 400G from telkom. Both are the same price. R850.00

Which one would you recommend ?

I'm leaning towards the Netgear.
This will be used only as a modem in a small office but i need it to have 4 ports to use as router in case of emergency.

Thanks

Both are R850. Which one would you recommend?

The Billion is priced on Telkom's website between R959 and R962. (Where did you get the price tag of R850?)

The NetGear is priced on Telkom's website at R959 (for the DG834GUv5 model) and at R1251 elsewhere for the DG834G model.

To my limited knowledge it appears that the Billion has superior VPN functionality.

But it appears that the Netgear has USB ports so that could be useful for network printing/storage.

Try and avoid purchasing a device that has a fixed (non-detachable) antenna.

Whichever unit you purchase, please add some photos and/or specs sheet to this thread because there's not much info in cyberspace on these devices...

Find the Netgear info here: http://www.hcom.co.za/products-netgear-DG834GUv5.html
They seem to sell for R800/R850 through private okes who've received them from Telkom. I've got a sealed one in the cupboard. I bought my own replacement elsewhere while Telkom was getting stock and now that they gave it to me, it's sitting around.

Netgear also supports vpn it also has software to help which is suppose to make vpn as easy as 1..2..3..
but unless u gonna use vpn then there is really difference between the 2 go for the cheaper one

N.B. Netgear is the newer of the so maybe that will tip the balance
but seriosly there is no difference between the 2

Ok thanks guys, sorry about the pricing mix up. I think i will be going with the Netgear then. I am no where near the branch for which this router is intended so won't be seeing it in the flesh sometime soon. I just told them to find out what their nearest telkom direct stocks so i could advise them on which one to get.

Thanks

Thank you very much for the links you posted, Gamer!

but seriosly there is no difference between the 2

I disagree, Mineer.

The NETGEAR

* It has a USB port for a network storage device.
* It also has improved LAN port speeds (up to 200Mbps) as well as a Wi-Fi on/off push button.
* Its VPN functionality supports up to 5 x IPSec VPN end points in addition to its VPN pass-through functionalities.

The BILLION

* It supports IPTV applications.
* One of its Ethernet ports can be dedicated for use with a console.
* It has built-in WDS functionality, which is mostly unheard of for a 802.11g ADSL router!

Not sure what you're on about, most wifi ADSL routers have WDS, including the Netgear. The only catch is, most WDS will only talk to other devices of the same brand.
My guess is there's very little difference between the 2 routers (there's very little difference between any 2 modern wifi ADSL routers these days*), so just get the cheapest one.

* OK, excluding Marconis of course, which are probably OK, but have a stigma cos they were Telkom's preferred router for years :)
