Choosing an ISP

Hi everyone,
I've recently decided to ditch dstv and start streaming. I have a 4mbps line with telkom and uncapped adsl from mweb. It was working perfectly fine until about 4 weeks ago- I've only had it for 6 weeks. Mweb is now telling me that streaming is slow cause I'm using illegal sites such as putlocker etc. Is this true? I decided to leave mweb, can anyone suggest which isp would be the best for streaming. I'm so new to the Internet world so any advice would be much appreciated.

CrystalWeb, a bit more expensive but worth it.
Try the free 1GB account.
 
Afrihost capped accounts are great too. I have a small cap, and their Afrihost Plus service which means that you get double the amount of data you signed up for. You also have uncapped data to use from 11h30pm to 07h30 am. Really happy with the service. Popcorn Time works well
 
It seems you've run foul of MWebs rolling 30 days FUP, you need to find out how many GBs you would use per month in peak time to determine the best account for your needs.

Stay far away from openweb they are crooks.

Have a look at Afrihost their prices are absolutely stunning ( I am with Vox so no affiliation )
 
I see a few of you mentioned crystal Web. I had a look at it this afternoon and saw that they were hacked recently. So this does deter me. What do you think of Web Africa and axxess? I'm also interested in afrihost. The whole time I was with mweb is used about 35gb. Therefore, I think 100gb would suffice.
Is it true what they said about streaming being slow because of the use of illegal sites?
Any advice on capped vs uncapped- which would be faster?

I'll leave the crystal web question for someone else.

As for the rest I am with Web Africa as well however I do not like them anymore due to the throttling my account barely works during business hours (which is when I need it!)

They throttle p2p ( teamviewer, utorrent, "illegal sites") heavily so you can forget about downloading your series.

They don't throttle youtube although there is a very big noticeable difference between when I watch youtube on Web Africa and when I watch on Vox.

I would honestly say afrihost is very attractive their pricing is on point and they do not throttle capped accounts at all. Whether you download series or browse the web its just pure bliss.


But Thor, if they are so good why are you not with them?

Good question, I was with them since 2005ish but in December 2014 I think it was during 2014 or early 2015 I/we our business included had a massive out fall about dishonesty in the company and lies they told the public during that time and thus out of principle I will not return to them.

I now believe they have changed and came a long way since, but personally I am still a bit upset about a episode of years ago.

Capped will be faster.

Yeah there was a hacking incident recently. They outsourced a part of their operation to a subcontractor & that subcontractor's gear got hacked.

I also need to pick an ISP soonish and will probably pick CW despite the above.
 
Great thanks so much. Just been so upset about it cause I'm not a Internet/computer wiz at all and I finally took the plunge to ditch dstv and ended up with an account from mweb which worked amazingly well for two weeks and now I can't stream at all. After fighting with them for four weeks they're now telling me its the sites I'm using. Unfortunately, I don't know what to believe!

There is a host of threads here abut Mweb I don't trust them and they do throttle you that's been proven over and over here.

Im willing to put my rep on the line you won't have that issues with Afrihost they're known for the rape accounts or you as a user can rape the network and then get rewarded by being listed on a leaderboard that you are the biggest bandwidth whore.

I love it.

Also month to month so you can cancel anytime if your unhappy and then come back here

Not sure about line speed requirements for HD steaming all I know if your account will perform at your line speed and not be hindered.

I have two 40Mbps lines so can't remember the last time I checked what I can and can't do since I can do anything :D:D:D:D:D
 
Now imagine if youtube buffers when I have a 40Mbps line.

Wow okay, don't be going for WA then. I used to stream 720p on a 4mbps line and it worried perfectly at the beginning. Now I'm lucky if I can stream a 240p. All I want it for is streaming.

I got a 4meg line as well.. tried many isp's until I moved to cw... if streaming is what u after then they are the best isp for it... I use about 300gigs a month mainly streaming and no issues at all... try their live chat and trial account...
 
What's your take on afrihost? You don't think they would just prioritise the trial accounts?
