Chromecast question

Once you download the Plex media server and run that on your PC, then you need to buy the Plex app on your tablet or smartphone. Costs R20 odd or so.

The Plex mobile app will connect to the media service which you can then push to the Chromecast. It actually works really well, and is a breeze to use. The mobile app becomes a menu of sorts for streaming to the Chromecast dongle.

Plex is the only media streaming service which really works flawlessly with the Chromecast.

As far as I am aware you control it from within the relevant app on your cellphone.

It does not have a remote and your tv's remote wont work.

Edit: LOL. Nevermind.

Looks like a really great piece of hardware

It really works well - you can stream content from direct from Chrome and YouTube. You can even stream your desktop using the Google Cast plugin with Chrome.

Another good app to use is AllCast which allows you to stream local content of your device. It's free, but has a small watermark unless you buy the app.

Its a very decent device. Any Android or PC on your network will do. Plex works great with it. Rdio is a bit buggy, prone to crashing.

But, (Big but) its not a use-everyday device, the having to cast to it from a tablet or phone is sometimes a chore. I have a Chromecast in the bedroom, and a Roku Stick in the Living Room. Same form factor, you almost don't know its there, but the Roku has a wifi remote (Feels freaky actually, you don't have to point it at anything) And it even has a shortcut button for Netflix.

And it gives the same functionality as the 'Cast. I'm typing this on my PC in the study. I can easily open Netflix or Youtube on the browser, cast and lower the volume of the movie the kids are watching in the Living Room.

(with great power comes great responsibility, and the wife says I can't mess with them )

Each to his own, I guess.
Been using the Roku Stick (R180 more than the Chromecast on Takealot) for the last few months. Can't see myself going back to the Chromecast.

I must look at that. I did enjoy the roku 3

At times it can feel a little slower in terms of responsiveness, especially if you're used to the Roku 3. But it's not a deal breaker. It's still a great product.

lol - it really does :)

id' like to mirror my (old) android phone to a chromecast dongle on the TV, load a VPN service on the phone and then cast from Netflix to the chromecast.

does anybody know if that'll work?

any alternative suggestions are welcome but i'm not hugely techno orientated.

i already have 2 x samsung dongles which work with my JB device but not with the ICS or KK tablets.

Does Plex really need the PC server to run before the cellphone app works?
I have the cellphone, chromecast and a WD Mypassport wireless drive and would love to view content via Plex, but I think it would be a schlep to run a plex pc server 24/7 in order to view media from the drive.
Is there perhaps a Plex Android server app? (to run Plex from an old cellphone/tablet).
