circle.co.za hosting: a two-word review

Haven't worked with them before

Kindly provide more info about why you say they are terrible ? As I would like to know

Awful server configuration and zero "support". When they do bother to respond to tickets, it just illustrates their sheer incompetence.

I only started this thread because they've put me in the invidious position of having to explain to my client why I need to change hosts, and more pertinently, why they have to change their email settings (which took them a while for this host - they are not in anyway "IT-literate" - my clients, that is).

i've had some sites on their windows hosting platform.
i'm not sure that you can go too wrong with plesk tbh.
i haven't really ever needed to contact them.
the one time i did, the response time was okay.
can't say i've used their mail. if people don't want to use google apps, that's their problem ;)
what exactly was the issue with their server config? i've certainly come across worse hosts in my lifetime.

It's a LAMP server, in this case. I cannot wait months for them to install an extension they said they'd do the same day.

"Support" is regardless of the hosting platform.

Worse hosts? Maybe not, but they're still ****.

personally, i'd say that getting a custom extension installed is a bit of a favour.
i've always managed to get things done without needing extra extensions.
unless it's something basic like gd, curl or rewrite.
perhaps shared hosting isn't really the right option if you have very specific server config needs?
but i guess if they said they'd do it, they should stick to their word.
sorry to hear about your problem. unfortunately sometimes we're stuck with the hosts our clueless clients chose.

I'm on their Windows package, so I can't compare, but the support I've had has been generally good.

Hmmm... I'll need a host for a new client soon and Circle looked like the ideal choice, but this kinda scares me a bit. The one query I did send them on pricing a couple of months ago was unanswered for almost 6 weeks - should this be seen as a reflection of their support as well?

What hosting features are you looking for? We have cPanel hosting with Softaculous & RVSiteBuilder installed, and I'm always open & happy to install any extension which isn't installed already as long as it's compatible with what we have and doesn't cause problems with other clients on the same server. If you like, I could give you a 6-month trail account, on a South African server?

I need ASP.NET MVC hosting, so it will have to be Shared Windows... ;)

(that's to say, if you were aiming that post at me :D)

EDIT: Had a quick look at your Shared Windows packages and the R100 p/m package is good value. I've got some small clients running smaller sites (no databases) and they can only stomach a hosting bill of around R50 - R70 per month. Do you have something in that price bracket?

Been hosting on circle for around a year now... A Joomla PHP site, no problems... Setup was quick, never really need anything from them and did everything myself.

My offer is open to anyone :)

I can definitely make you a deal. How much space / emails, and what other features do they need?

No other features needed, if it has ASP.NET 2.0/3.5, MVC and SQL Server 2005+ it should be fine. I've got my own proprietary URL rewriting module implemented in all my sites not running MVC.

I'll contact you with the details of the specific sites, but none of them need hosting space of more than 50 MB and 5 email inboxes at the most... Traffic isn't very heavy either, so bandwidth of around 2GB per month should be sufficient (for now).

If it was the same extension that midrange was talking about on another thread it is the mySQL pdo extension

The extension I wanted installed is pdo mysql. This is installed on most PHP servers. It won't affect other users.

I would be interested in your offer (if you have that extension installed :p )

Farlig, I would avoid, seriously, the support is awful.

SoftDux: what version of PHP have you?

Didn't see this post. Yes.

James, it was you that first pointed me in the direction of Yii. Shot, very nice framework.

We already have MySQL PDO installed on most servers and I'll install it without a question on any server that doesn't have it installed yet.
Some servers run PHP 5.2.14 and some on 5.3.x (latest stable one).

They (circle) have finally installed it

My rant stands though.
