Been hearing this on 702 for the past few days, as the "informing" add goes and then there is a part that says that circumcision is a key preventive measure for aids.

More disinformation ?

I have seen studies that go either way but it seems there is a small benifit to being circumcised. The way they go about advertising I can just imagine guys saying "dont worry I'm circumcised".

Wouldn't be surprised of that is already happening.

afaik there is a real benefit...knowing our local peasants they'll interpret it as "circumcision means no condom necessary" though...

I heard such a crazy ad on 5FM the other day. About two minutes long with a trendy young black guy and the minister of health waffling on about the health benefits of such a procedure.

It's incredibly stupid, in my view, as (already mentioned) the obvious conclusion to draw from the message is 'sleeping around without a condom is fine, as long as you are circumcised'.

As far as I can gather, there is some small degree of protective effect, but the benefits of just wearing a goddamn condom (is this so difficult?) doesn't hold a candle to the general dangers of casual unprotected sex, even if circumcised.

I think you guys are not getting this.

People are sleeping around a plenty without using condoms although they know the risks.

If you are living day to day the risk of a long term slow acting disease is not a major concern.

Finding a way to get people who are already practising poor safety is a good idea.

Condoms are also not 100%, but no one is expecting complete abstinence, that is not going to work.

So I am glad they are looking at a multi-dimensional approach, however if the ads are promoting circumcision as an alternative to condoms (which I highly doubt) that would need to be stopped.

Only if the feeling of safety created doesn't lead to *more* risky behaviour...which as pointed out above it certainly will given the low levels of education.

Lowering your risk by less than 3% from what I remember reading before is hardly "prevention".

Prevention would mean gain been circumcised makes you immune, which is simply not the case.

Also worth noting is that pretty much every black culture demands circumcision, yet HIV/AIDS is most prevalent amongst blacks in Africa.

It's a lie effectively. Even the wildly exaggerated infection reduction claimed by some studies would require a huge number of circumcisions to prevent a single infection. In the real world it would be orders of magnitude more.

That's exactly what it will do. Besides men would have to ask why bother with this when they're going to have to wear a condom anyway?

I'm not getting it, admittedly. How will circumcision help sexually active males? Is the government offering the chop for free?

I think that circumcisions are free at places mentioned in the ads. The problem is that the ads are using the catch-phrase "be wise circumcise" instead of "be wise condomise".

This just in: A fireman suit is a key preventative measure for landing on the sun.

I'm sure it will protect you for a fraction of a second longer than if you were naked.

As far as I know, the only reason that it might help, is that a foreskin can be prone to getting micro tears during sex.

I still think it is a totally stupid reason to promote circumcision though.

Our deputy president on tv said circumcision reduces the chance of infection by a whopping 60%........So if you're in the other 40% you're screwed :D

This is prolly aimed at all the deaths that were resulting from going to "the bush" to get circumcised and they are hiding behind the hiv infection reduction as a way to attract people.

a billionth of a second to the power of a million, if you land on a sunspot, to the power of 999 999, however you would die before even reaching that far the radiation, would mostly likely kill you.

Can 702 really afford to run ads like that, considering I have listened to them once or twice and banged my head on the steering wheel, they finally proved, there are moronic flocks of migrating idiots out here, that feed on vague information, flies around in circles, and never settle on points, and they share info like this without properly explaining it, they should be held liable and be sued their shirts of their backs.
