City Power electricity charge for complexes

Since there is different tarriff blocks for different type of customers, how does this work for people in a complex?

It is one stand so there is one main meter and the landlord got one of those third party vendors to split that into individual prepaid meters. The charges are broken down so we are able to see what amount actually goes towards electricity units after they have taken their share.

Are we going to be charged according to the inclining block tariffs as per the bulk consumption of the building? Meaning do we automatically fall into the highest rate since our consumption will be over 500kWh?

Lastly, are complexes charged on a business rate or residential?

Firstly, going prepaid is super dumb seriously

I dont know about city power, but coj newest info for 2023/2024, estates are billed per residential rate. Some complexes do winter and summer rates

Are complexes allowed to set their own rates that are different to city power?

Would you by any chance have the 23/24 rates, City Power still has the old rates on their website.

No you not allowed to make profit of electricity or water as a landlord. The service charges of submeters are paid for by the landlord.

Your rate of charge whether business or residential depends on what zone the complex is in.

As a landlord no - but if you a registered 3rd party vendor with NERSA and a registered reseller of electricity you can add a capped fee to the token you sell to the end user. This covers "administration costs" from what I believe.

But the actual rate per kwh should remain as stipulated by the municipality, right?

My receipt has vat and the vendors fee, then it shows me the actual money that goes towards electricity, that is already over R3 per unit excluding vat and the vendors fee.

Correct, when I was still on the bodycorp you were charged according to the bulk meter - so even if you were in the 100kw tariff range, you would still be knobbled because the complex was in the higher bracket.

It always irked me because you could never budget your consumption and there was never incentive to reduce it.

EDIT: This was for City of Tshwane by the way.

So the complex due to the obviously higher consumption will automatically be allocated to the highest rate?

Does anyone have the new rates for City Power?

I can only find this from an article here on MyBb. So it seems we are not being charged on Block 1 or 2, I am just interested to see which block are we bring charged at.

According to City Power, prepaid users will see the per kilowatt hour (kWh) rate increase to R2.10/kWh for block 1, and R2.41/kWh for block 2. The prices are excluding VAT.

The service connections we provide are divided into two categories namely Small Power Users (SPU) and Larger Power Users (LPU).


A Small Power User is defined as a user who has an electrical service connection no greater than 56 kVA (3 phase, 80 ampere). In general most households would have this type of service connection.


A Large Power User is defined as a user who has an electrical service connection larger than 56 kVA. In general these type of connections are used for medium and large commercial or industrial consumers as well as high density residential developments.

From their website, they don't divide users into sub-categories and the two categories used are SPU and LPU, so you might have to look at the business tariff?
 
Think the first question would be, does city power feed your estate directly or not. That is the biggest question
 
And secondly, ask a municipal bill.... the rate you are getting charged are in bold! You cant miss it.

Yes City power feeds us directly, it gets broken down inside the complex, things were bad with the postpaid when they were estimating, now things have become worse with the third party vendor.
