Hi All,

Just a quick question, what criteria is there for claiming travel on your tax return?

thx

haha i pray everyday i win the lotto ...sit home play games the life ...

but im sure there is a way to claim for travel

rofl i am specifically looking for information on claiming travel, i.e do you need to have a travel allowance etc

I would also like to know how exactly this all works.

Say I have a travel allowance + a company garage card (used for personal as well as company travel/ not indicated on my pay slip).

Do I need to disclose anything about the garage card? Can I claim against the travel allowance as normal?

Iv got a travel allowance of 2K/ month.
We need to fill out all business travel in a travel log book and will submit it next year with tax return.

Three scenarios:
1) Do you get a travel allowance every month?
2) Do you get reimbursed per km after you have travelled, where the total mileage is more than 8000 km?
3) Do you get reimbursed per km after you have travelled, where the total mileage is less than 8000 km?

option 3

Basically expenses incurred in the earning of income are tax deductible.

This excludes travel to & from work. It [obviously] also excludes any expenses for which you are reimbursed by your employer.

NB: SARS view such claims with a jaundiced eye. So be prepared to prove that your very life depends upon the travel for which you are claiming ... :)

True, but travel reimbursements for < 8000km are generally not a problem, as long as it does not exceed the prescribed rate (which I think is the AA rate). It's when you exceed 8000km that you'll need to start providing proof, or if you receive a travel allowance.

3703 is non taxable so there is no need to claim anything against it. it will reflect on the IRP 5 as such.

so in other words there is no point?

if you can can you explain when someone is able to that would benefit them?

Are you sure? I pay tax on my total income every month (which includes travel reimbursement), and then have to claim it back. It's pretty much the same for everyone I know.
