Good evening

I am looking at purchasing a new violin case from a company in the States, however, I suspect the import duties is going to slap me...Could someone more knowledgeable on this matter please lend some insight regarding this matter.

The way I understand it, I'll have to pay 30% import duty on an Instrument case. Is this correct. (The figure was obtained from this site: http://www.dutycalculator.com/hs-lookup/171670/hs-tariff-code-for-instrument-case/)

Basically, does an instrument case carry import duty? If yes, then is the 30% accurate? I've purchased things from the US before, but this is the first time it seems I need to be concerned about custom duties.

Thank you for any information.

That's how it reads to me, compared to piano parts which carry no duty.

I wonder if the duty on ordinary luggage such as suitcases is different? Probably a different tariff code. If it is, then your violin case is arguably that and not an instrument part. It'll be up to the Commissioner to interpret, which in practice means the Customs agent.

Thanks for the replies guys! :)

I found a pdf on the SARS website that confirms 30% customs duty. A bit painful to say the least.

Regarding the luggage suitcase...the general consensus though it seems, is that if something can be placed in two categories it will be the higher percentage one. It would be nice to imagine customs being nice to me though :D

O well...I hope the government enjoys the money Im about to give the little $@%! :p

Iniquitous that Caesar taxes you so heavily. My condolences.
