Hi guys,

I know this has been asked on here a few times but I just want to make sure I have my ducks in a row before implementing my plan...

This is my current set up :

R159 OpenWeb 2Gb 30Gb local
R 90 OpenBrowse
R152 TelkomADSL line rental
Wired SMC router
R401

With this setup I am currently just using all my international first on everything, including local downloads, and then "switching on" OpenRouter and continuing to browse international, and download locally, through the local OpenWeb proxy.

My problem with this is that after the first few days of the month, when international cap reached, I can no longer chat on Skype or do those odd international downloads I need done.

Now I am moving across to this package set up :

R139 Nashua Mobile 1Gb including 384k ADSL line rental
R 90 OpenBrowse
R130 30Gb local
Wireless Billion router
R359

And in doing so I am wanting to look into being able to seperate international and local on my laptop as well as another PC in the house. They will both be connected to the Billion router wirelessly. This will then mean that I can save that international bandwidth for Skype etc.

Now my "research" has revealed that RouteSentry appears to be the best way to do this. Now a few questions if I may:

I am led to believe route sentry is pc based so will need to be loaded on both computers in my home?

I have read elsewhere that route sentry does not allow the sharing of connections on more than one pc. Is this correct? If so how do I overcome this?

Lastly, how easy is this all really to set up? The routesentry website makes it all sound a little complicated.... :)

Any other advice and solutions to problems stumbled upon by others in doing this will be much appreciated...

Thanks

What is the process involved when you stop paying Telkom for the ADSL line rental and you now pay the ISP directly? Do Telkom need a notice period? After all the line is still in place, you are just paying someone else. Do they cut you off and then reconnect you, or is it a continuous service?

An option may be ...

Use your Billion to connect to your local-only account and share this to your wireless clients. So all day to day stuff is using the local.

Enable PPPoE relay / Half-bridge on the Billion.

Create PPPoE dial-ups on the PCs for doing your International stuff.

The only downside to this scenario is that Skype will only run when the dial-up is established, and during that time all your traffic from that PC is via the International connection. It might just work for you.;)

Thanks Violator. Any suggestions and help is appreciated.

This means though that I would need to plan my calls and will not get to see when mates are on Skype until I "dial up".

I also want to get some specifics on this set up. Does this mean that I put the local connection username and password into my router and then set up a normal dial up connection to my international connection on my laptop? My laptop will always be connected to the net via the local but then when I want to use international I would "dial" the other connection?

I think this is what I did the last few days with a top up IS 1Gb account I bought but as you stated I forgot to stop my downloads when doing this, so I have used it all already... probably mostly on local too! So this set up is not ideal unless I stop all my local while using Skype and then remembering to disconnect when downloading again, but perhaps a solution. Thanks

Correct, and you know "dial-up" means a "Broadband (PPPoE) connection that requires a user name and password"

This solution is not ideal but it is very easy to set up. I use it the other way around (International to the Wireless clients and Local via "dial-up" to a PC which basically only downloads).

Hope this helps ..... PM if you need any specifics

I will be using a Billion 7300G wireless router. So anyone with experience in setting this up on this router please feel free to let me know :)

PPPoE relay must be enabled under the following tabs: Configuration --> WAN --> ISP --> EDIT and then scroll right to the bottom and tick the little box that says PPPoE relay --> APPLY --> Save Config.

How would one go about to setup this on a Mega 100WR?

I was able to create the Int account setup. As soon as I created the local account there was no comms via the LAN cable to the modem/router. I had to connect via USB cable to get it to work after resetting the modem/router.
