I think the idea with "> First posts, intros, forum questions" was to introduce yourself and ask questions relating to the forum itself. NOT to ask technical questions here, but to rather do a separate post in the correct forum where it would get the appropriate exposure. Perhaps the mods/bots should make this more clear somewhere. Luckily one of the late night owls spotted your question here. ;)

The short answer to your question to "how do I get a Class C ip?"... You CAN'T. That is if I'm correct in assuming that the server is configured on a Class C subnet mask. A Class A mask would only allow access if the first ip number is the same as the server's, effectively restricting access to the same country or region. Class B would only allow access if the first two numbers are the same and would effectively restrict access to the same isp. Class C would be the first three numbers. Class D has to match the whole ip and restricts access to the same server, this is used to test applications and websites that are being developed. If the server is on a Class C subnet your ip has to match the first three numbers and if my guess is right this probably covers a university or college dorm and keeps any outsiders out.

The other answer is that a Class C ip address is one between 192 and 223. Since SA is 196 this doesn't make sense unless you're connecting through an international proxy, therefor I am leaning towards the first answer. The easy solution is to simply pick another non-discriminatory server. The hard solution which you have been trying is to change your ip so it matches. This would involve hacking into the dorm and grabbing a matching ***.***.***.??? ip for yourself. Not worth the effort to play a game with a bunch of losers.

I would think that steam / Half life is binding to your local Ethernet IP

192.*

or :o

10.*

or something like that, i dont have any experience with steam myself, but dig around in the settings and see if you can get it binding to your external ip.

+ check that your router's NAT is set up correctly...?

Update your counter strike and steam.

I only remember seeing that error message in 1.5 before valve stepped in.

You not by any chance trying to connect to a server on a hamachi network are you?

If you are google is your friend, their is a work around.

hmmm....i was trying to play with my friend tonight using hamachi and the same problem occured....the Class C thing (Steam). So i finally figured out wat the prob was, but, is it now possible for you to change your ip or do you have to download a certain programme?

I saw one called Hamalias, but couldnt find a download link, plz help, it would be much appreciated;)

No can't change your ip, you can spoof it with a proxy, but it will still broadcast your ip, unless you use an anonymous proxy, but that would defeat the purpose of having an unique ip in the first place. The correct thing would be not to make these ip restrictions in the first place, but we know how zealous these game developers can be.
