Hi guys,

Any one here that plays either classical guitar or violin? I would like to start learning either the one or the other, I'm 29 and have never played either before in my life :). I will probably get private lessons, but it will solely be for recreational purposes only.

I just need some guidance into what to select and get going, I have both the violin and guitar bough already.... :) Was very eager lol.

Regards,
Fay

Guitar. You are going to annoy lots of people with a violin :D

This. i can actually play both. a violin is extremely loud.learn violin in an environment where you can make noise, or get an electric violin and turn down the sound.i started with guitar and i picked up violin quickly (according to my gf with grade 6 in piano and violin). my left hand was well trained so it was just a matter of adjusting and getting the bowing action. with guitar you can also play a wide variety of music.

Hi guys,

Thanks for the input, now to find someone willing to teach an old person to play it :)

Regards,

A guitar is far easier than a violin, in fact I would say the guitar is the easiest instrument of all to learn. You can become proficient in one afternoon. Careful about trying to sing at the same time though, this takes more practice

The biggest impediment to learning a musical instrument for an adult beginner is a lack of time. Children will do their one hour of practise per day while adults have so many other urgencies that come before playing an instrument.

Personally I would rather take up the violin. Tone creation on a violin is very difficult though so it takes a long time to be able to play even simple pieces.

I'm in Pretoria, centurion area. Got a list of people from the local music store, will start calling in the new year and hope to get a nice old guy :)

Hehe. I would like to meet the superhuman who becomes proficient at guitar in one afternoon. I've been playing for 15 years and I don't think I'm even proficient yet :D

good point.thats another reason why i picked up violin quickly. after playing guitar for a while you become proficient in distinguishing whether a note is false or not, because a guitars notes are (near) perfect because of frets. when you then switch over to violin you can pick up if youre playing false or not. if that makes sense. btw, guitar isnt the easiest instrument of all. my gf has grade 6 in violin and piano and she feels classical guitar is more difficult than both. to each his own.
