Yes, the best solution is having a surge protector on the DB, but if you renting you rely on surge plugs.

Anyways, so what I noticed with the Clearline Fridge Surge Protector is when the voltage spike it switches off, going into protect mode, but it doesn't switch back on again. You have to manually switch it off at the wall and on again to reset it.

Obviously if this happens while away for a couple of days you come back home with a fridge that smells like a politician.

What is the solution? A smart plug that sends a notification if there is no power draw / wattage and then you remotely switch it off and on again? Which Smart plug? Any other ideas?

I have been using one of these protectors with my fridge for years and I have never had this problem. Maybe the one you have is faulty.

A smart plug will work, there’s plenty on Takealot around the R300 mark. I use one to remotely switch a security camera on and off and it works great.

It will have to be before the surge protector and if OP is getting voltage spikes, that thing will have an early death.

I've lost a Sonoff Pow and 2 Qualitel light switches due to load shedding.

No its not faulty. You just have not had a spike in Voltage. It happens very seldom, but the risk is high due to the excessive load shedding. But that is what they are there for. To protect the appliance, in this case just not the food.

This is the thing. The plug is doing its job. But like you said, the smart plug will probably go then making it pointless anyways for if this happens again.

its faulty .it should reset automatically .you will find the timing circuit has fried during a possible spike .phone clearline .

The Ellies fridge protector works well. It protects both against too high and too low Voltages. These protectors cost +R300 each and they can also be damaged by high voltage surges. I had a couple of months ago, on the DB board surge protection installed for the whole house and hopefully it lengthens the live the fridge protector. I was told, that one can still use a welder with the DB board protection.

I am not referring to when the power goes on and off. The plug still has a 5 minute delay when the appliance switches on. It is working as intended. I am referring to the high voltage surges.

Ha! Just saw this review as well:

its faulty unless see last sentence .phone clearline and ask them .no consumer grade disconnect will stay off indefinitely after a shunt .protection is for a few minutes after a shunt is noticed usually 180 to 240 v .maybe your mains is running high and thats why its not resetting .eskom will probably get away with 10% and it may be on the reset point.just get a surgetek db mounted unit and sit back and relax .next that disconnect will start tripping the EL unit

Sounds like their device is buggy, from the manual snapshot it sounds like it should turn on automatically after a delay following a voltage spike and return to normal voltage.

Cool will give them a call.

remember if its had a shunt its done its job .i use that word loosely .IF ....

you can also fit one of these .if it gets a surge the flag will go red .you then unplug it and plug a new unit in .never seen one popped yet .and it doesnt disconnect anything .but it will protect your New fridge protectors

I've never used a surge protector for any of my stuff (should probably protect the electronics at some point), so a bit surprised that a fridge needs protection. Have you had your stuff fail due to surges, etc?
