Did Gareth Cliff overstep the line in terms of how far one can go on-air?

An opinion here would be greatly appreciated. Even, I, as a Christian think this uproar and reaction to his morning show was a bit over the top...

Maybe a fine and slap on the wrist sort of punishment to Cliff would suffice but only due to his insensitivity to his listener, who took the time to write in to the station penning her concerns...

Anyone? Antowan perhaps?

Of course he has the right to he's opinion. In history there was a time when people where also as paranoid as now, it was called the witch trails

Rofl. So Cliff agrees that the idea of killing someone for naming a teddy bear after a deity is petty, and there're complaints? :)

Your taxes pay for his salary seeing as 5FM is a government radio station.

I think he should be a bit more careful in his diatribes.

Wasn't he fired from a different radio station thanks to religious ramblings before?

He was moved from the premier 3-5pm slot to 6 or 7 - 9am slot. Not too sure it was about his religious ramblings... Not too sure though.

I think that it is time that Gareth has an interview with Mohammed and ask him what he thinks about this teddy bear saga.

Christians must ask themselves to which God Gareth was referring, their God or Islam's God. Even acknowledging that both exist or none exist is blasphemous and is going to p!ss of someone.

Ok, google found this:

He was fired from Tuks (?) "after a show in which he ran a penis size competition, did a parody song on PW Botha and the TRC, called up his maid for a weather report and held an imaginary prostrate examination on air." (http://www.bizcommunity.com/Person/410/59/365.html)

He was also suspended by 5FM for "Interviewing Jesus" (http://www.bizcommunity.com/Article/196/59/3208.html)

Fined for exercising freedom of speech? Surely you jest?

I don't see anything wrong with his response either.

So i could tell my boss or CEO or customer/consumer to Fsuck off and when i get fired/fined/klapped/warning i just say freedom of speech buddy and go to CCMA... c'mon they'll chase you away...

Agreed, but the listener is 5fm's ala Cliff's consumer is she not... He basically told to fsuck off more elegantly... no???

No he did not. You're trying to put words that he didn't say into his mouth. Let's concentrate on what he did actually say.

Ok, so what does that mean?

The constitution clearly defines the following:
# The right in subsection (1) does not extend to *

1. propaganda for war;
2. incitement of imminent violence; or
3. advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion, and that constitutes incitement to cause harm.

I'm not suggesting that Cliff is in the wrong, I am, however, pointing out that there is a line. Freedom of speech is only so "free".

WTF are you on about? Cliff said nothing of the sort!

I agree that freedom of speech needs to be limited to that which does not result in physical harm. I don't think Cliff came close to that.
