Cliff - Right or Wrong?

Did Gareth Cliff overstep the line in terms of how far one can go on-air?

This should prolly be moved to Philosophical debates.

Ok, lets concentrate on that...

"Stop sprouting nonsense. There is no god. There is no tooth fairy and there is no Father Christmas."

In his follow-up e-mail to Povey, Cliff placed into context what he was trying to say on his show.

"I will never agree with you just as you find my lack of belief so distasteful. The difference is that I concern myself with people, and try to be a good and hopefully moral person.

"I don't need blessings or permissions or prayers. I'm a happy guy."

Follow up mail was way more elegant... the first one... well, "stop sprouting nonsense" seems to me a bit harsh

not wrong (Cliff) just maybe insensitive and stepped over the line...

Would a preacher saying on the air that atheists are going to hell for eternity be insensitive and stepping over the line?

I moered him in a night club once, he's rude arrogant and bloody annoying
got what was due to him ;)

Some people hate him, some people love him. I just can't take he's arrogance

So do you feel that Cliff was in the wrong here? I'd like to know your opinion on that.
I don't care. Celebrities are like politicians - they will do anything to be heard. Cliff seems to like being on the controversial side of things.

Either way, I do feel that the world is becoming increasingly over sensitive over religion, politics and race. People should just calm the **** down already. We wouldn't have come where we are in the world if our predecessors were a bunch of namby pambies.

Agree 110% with this.

I think that it is time that Gareth has an interview with Mohammed and ask him what he thinks about this teddy bear saga.

Christians must ask themselves to which God Gareth was referring, their God or Islam's God. Even acknowledging that both exist or none exist is blasphemous and is going to p!ss of someone.

that's retarded. we all believe in the same God.

On a Christian station = No
On a Public station = Yes

That's an interesting distinction.

To be honest though, the comparison is more fairly saying "Stop sprouting nonsense...God does exist". If a DJ had said that on either a public or specifically Christian station no-one would give a damn.

I don't like the idiot (cliff) at all. That's why I don't listen to him.

What's wrong with these christians? Can't they turn a dial?

Also. I don't need them to watch over what I hear, see or read. I am capable of doing that myself!

Ok, so what does that mean?

The constitution clearly defines the following:

I'm not suggesting that Cliff is in the wrong, I am, however, pointing out that there is a line. Freedom of speech is only so "free".

# The right in subsection (1) does not extend to *

1. propaganda for war;
2. incitement of imminent violence; or
3. advocacy of hatred that is based on race, ethnicity, gender or religion, and that constitutes incitement to cause harm.

1 - he was not creating propaganda for war.
2 - he's words may have stirred emotion, but no violence would've come from this. probably just hate mail etc... he is a radio presenter. he is supposed to talk about things that gets people to tune in.
3 - may i remind you that he was not speaking ill of religion. he passed a comment about God. he did not advocate hatred based on any of those things that you mentioned.

and furthermore LMAO. this guy is brilliant and a nutjob - i was reading some other post about some of the things he has done in the past. he is controversial, but who doesn't love listening to him? he speaks his mind, which is more than i can say for most of us. he has a right to believe what he wants and say what he wants, as long as he doesn't ill-speak of race and/or religion, and his actions do not incite violence and does not cause any harm to anyone. people should stop being so bloody sensitive and learn to be more tolerant and open-minded. it's these close-minded people that scare me the most. that lady said she wanted to cry. give me a freakin' break. give the guy a break

Ahh yes, what a wonderful way to advance humanity. Only preach to the choir.

LMAO !

Dude, read my first post, you asked a question and i answered you.

Fact is: God is not to be played down any where. If you believe in him or not. There is a huge Majority of the World that does belive in God. So if you want to be doing something so utterly stupid, don't do it in the Public broadcasting sector

This is happening all accross the world. Christians has always been tollerent of many things. If he said something like that in relation to Islam in Ramadan he would have been stoned to death a few hours later.

How hard is it for you to add one and one ? Pls don't try and get emotional but think of the other people also.
