Clone XP Os Drive to new drive?

In the Namibian desert...
My c drive that had XP as Os, is making clicking noises....the size is 80gb..

I found a spare 1tb drive, which I have just formatted on another machine...

I now want to install it into old clicking machine....mirror the current clicking c drive onto it and then dump the old c drive replacing it with the mirror "new" drive..

What is the easiest , simplest way of mirroring the drive? Suggest freeware software that can do this?

Clicking, too late moose, it's ****ed. If it has important data then it can be recovered by Southbit.

I have a Ssd drive that I have been meaning to replace with, but was not looking forward the re installing all the schlepp software...and xp with Win7..... kept on delaying.... All my music, movies and pics are backed up on me home network, so not to worried....just don't like spending me weekend installing.....

Oh well, going from XP would really require a reinstall anyway.
 
The clicking has gone quiet..... Plex is busy serving , i just plugged in my external drive and copied over a number of files . No bother...

Think, I can still clone this drive before it goes...... Need freeware imaging software?

On the other hand, I should install the ssd and then install w7 onto this and use as a dual boot...

I will have to tinker around after midnight as the clan are accessing the movies on the slave drive of the machine....

It's running as it should, only a lot slower and on opening multi windows or apps, the clicking starts...stops starts and the screen freezes for awhile, then carries on.... It has to be the drive on her way....

Just wanted to mirror the drive onto another 1tb drive and replace...less schlep..
 
Ubuntu live CD, put both drives in the PC and boot off the CD. Open the "Disks" application, click on the 80GB and note the name under "Device" - it should read /dev/sdX#, where X is a letter from a, and # is a number, starting at 1. Do the same for the 1TB drive.

Now open a Terminal window, and type "sudo dd if=(device name of 80GB without the digit) of=(device name of 1TB without the digit) bs=4M", e.g. sudo dd if=/dev/sdb of=/dev/sda bs=4M. This means use the disk duplicator (dd) application to read from an input file (in this case your 80GB drive) and create an exact copy on the output file (1TB drive), with a block size of 4MB (if you exclude this, the process will take much longer). WARNING: It is absolutely critical to get the order of the drives right. If you swap the "if" and "of" options, you will end up with two perfectly blank drives.

Once this is done, use GParted to expand the partition to the full size of the 1TB disk.

The whole process should take about an hour, depending on drive speed and level of damage to the 80GB.

Going to fiddle with CloneZilla...... See if I can get the image, i suspect it might get stuck when it hits the bad sectors....

Will give feedback...

Don't have Ubuntu live....got Mint somewhere.... Will keep your suggestion in mind....thnx..

The drive is failing and you're not just using it but running plex on it? :confused:
 
Ok! A new morning, new problems....

Got clonezilla...... started to clone , but was too late, Clonez let me kindly know, that the physical structure of the disc is damaged and a clone ain't gonna happen...

I ain't too stressed , nothing of major importance...... everything backed up...

So I install a 1TB Sata that I had lying around.... already formatted to NTFS....

Stuck the w7 dvd INTO THE EXTERNAL usb dvd DRIVE.... CHANGED BOOT TO boot first from DVD and then my day starts....

NTLDR Missing..... Press CTRL.....

So thinking it might be the W7 DVD, I tried both my Puppy Linux DVD and The Mint Linux DVD.....both have same message....

What gives? Oh! Clever Overlords with much PC knowledge, Advise.....
