Johannesburg - Clothing and textile workers are set to picket outside factories on Tuesday in a strike to press for better wages, a union official said.

Sactwu is demanding a 7.9% salary increase in cities and an 11.5% wage hike in rural areas, where it says workers are earning "much less" than their counterparts in the city.

This wouldn't be interesting, except for the article below it, from a month ago:

Another textile firm shuts down

Johannesburg - Yet another South African textile manufacturer will close its doors, despite government's attempts to protect the industry and retain jobs.

SBH Cotton Mills, which has been in business since 1950, has told clients it will close its doors by mid-November at the latest.

How do these fools, especially the union bosses, not realise that a strike will result in job losses for many? You can get a raise when you have no income! They will secure 10-odd% for some workers and several others will merely be jobless, how is this progressive.

Unions should be taken out back and shot because they aren't doing this country or their members any favours!

Like I said yesterday why would you want to be a local clothing industry.
We rather import than deal with this.

Well i work with t-shirts and clothing all day and the trouble is the workers are paid to much to actually be competitive in this country.

Most garments you find indicating they are made in Sa are generally bought from china and re branded due to the cost of buying locally.

Striking for more money in this industry is farkin stupid.

Sometimes you need to deal with this. Why do you think Woolworths mostly sells made-in-china? If we dont want to get our hands dirty, nothing will get better. Drop in Employment = rise in crime.

And how will forcing the industry on its knees with pay increases help with this industry?

You have to start with textile, and when we can produce textiles on a competitive level we ca start making cheaper stuff then the clothing industry will pick up. Now we have to import most of the good stuff at our exchange rate then make things here with people that does not want to work for the most amount of money they can get.

You are talking about an industry that even if you employ more people more does not get done and at no faster rate. The same work gets done at the same rate and speed with 50 people or 100 people.

Why would you import the material and everything if you can import the finished garment at a lower rate thatn making it here?

Our company is in the leather industry and we had this same crap in July. The workers where offered an increase, they demanded more even when explained that the company could not do it.

The union ****** members went on strike for a week and still got the increase they demanded. The non-union salaried staff, ended up getting no increase this year, losing their bonus and several other impacts, including any and all perks. We are waiting everyday for the news that either we'll be taking a 20% cut or closing the business.

Personally I've got no love for the unions and would happly take the leaders (those who don't actually work for any company, just run the unions) out to the wood shed and shoot them.

The worst part is the lemmings that are part of these unions don't even realise that when the company closes and they have no work, the leaders will still be fine and the union won't be supporting them.

It makes me sick!

Indeed, these types in ALL industries need to be hung and quartered

they are picketing outside of our offices right now... they are from the place across the street.

Funny thing is... when the other union members arrived they started picketing the Electrical Suppliers Factory... never mind the fact that it clearly says "Electrical Supply" on the sign board.

I guess literacy is not a requirement for Union Membership! :D
