Who's using who?

Looking to move away from our traditional backup strategy (tape-based) to a cloud-based solution.

Any recommendations?

- They have to allow fro encryption (PoPI requirement)
- Must be hosted locallly
- Must ideally be MS Data Protection Manager aware.

Thats going to be expensive if you have lots of data. Do you have a budget?

I have too much data to be able to afford those type of backups. I buy cheap servers with tons of disk space, make sure they are all setup in raid, and then backup to them with a tool like backula.

It all depends on your upload speed. No point unless you have a minimum of 10mbs upload. Your initial backup will be large, but then incremental.

We have a 200mbps breakout into MPLS and we'll dedicate 25% (50mbps) of this to backup and replication.

ghoti, we are looking at just that too, i.e. do disk-based backups on premise between our DPM servers. This will likely be the way we go, but I waqs requested at looking into this from a viability point of view.

For now, money isn't a problem.

Do you simply want to store your backups offsite or do you want to be able to recover them in the cloud? i.e. what's the plan when the main site burns down?

Have you considered going the colo route and hosting an offsite DPM node in a local data centre somewhere.
How much data are you needing to backup and how long to you need retention for?

Honestly if you want the best considering going overseas.

Amazon Glacier is just $0.01 per month per gigabyte and it has 99.999999999% durability.

There aren't really local companies that will be able to give you that...
