Hi
I know nothing about cars, only how to drive them.
I have a Jetta 2006 model which I took to Barons for a quote as I need to replace my clutch. They quoted me around 10k which includes the labour.

In your estimation is this a fair price?

Ouch. I'm paying R3500 for mine. Granted they're rebuilding my engine at the same time but that seems like a helluva lot for labour.

No idea on clutch prices, but from all the bad stories I've heard about Barons will never take anything to them to be repaired.

Why not take it for a 2nd quote at a clutch specialist?

You have a valid point there, I took my car to Barons a few months ago for a service and I wasnt too happy with the way they treat customers.

Why not post in the motoring section. The guys there are clued up and they sure to point you in the right direction.

I work in the motor industry and that is a bull***** price. Shop around...and try to find somebody with a decent rep. Ask the parts countersales guys for advice...

Try Wessels Motors in Kempton Park, Pomona road, they do excellent work -i have known them for 20 years now, always the same good service. I am going to guess, I estimate they will use the best parts, LUK or Valeo and they will charge around R3700 IF NOT LESS.

Is your clutch tired ? my 1997 jetta is still going strong, strange that yours gave in.

Go to a private mechanic, much better prices :)

why don't people just buy toyotas? my 2003 160i GLE now has 203,000 kms & it just keeps going. i would like to buy the model prior to this the 2000-2003 a look aftered version. any offers?
thanks

phone midas and ask them what a clutch cost. Their is the china one and a decent one.
Then you know if you are rip off.
You can also ask a gearbox place for a quote.

if u in durban go to khans gearbox centre in cator manor road . a professional outfit . u will not be sorry. save thousands . corolla 1999 ( clutch was hard & weak knee prompted cghange) cost me about R1600

If the Jetta has a dual-mass flywheel (and I suspect it does), then the price is about right. The clutch itself is not expensive, but likely the gearbox needs to be removed to get to it, and if the dual-mass flywheel is worn (and they usually are), it can't be skimmed, it has to be replaced - and they typically cost R4000-R5000 for the part alone.

I've been through this with my Mondeo - my clutch came to R10500. *wince*
