Seriously what S#*t is that? So the domain was not renewed is using the new EPP system, as of the 10th it expired and was not renewed as it was going to be moved over to a new server. Now apparently you have to pay R250 to get your domain back with the reg fee as it is in the redemption phase?!

The old co.za system there are no fees like that! They just delete it!

WTF? A way to make money with the new system

Each company that has a EPP licence dictates this terms, uniforum does not charge a redemption fee or renewal fee its your provider thats ripping you off....

No, this is how the world works my friend. .com's have been doing it for ages. It's not a "oh we beg you for money please pay us" type thing anymore. It's "your registration expired? END"

I believe the fee for .com is about $120? (stand to be corrected since I always pay before my domains expire)

Also, if I plan to move servers, I don't NOT pay my expiry fee. I either pay THEN move or move (if it's a registrar move)

I dont think that R250 fee is a Uniforum fee...

That is not actually true, as an EPP Registrar you have to abide by the Registrar agreement and there is a redemption phase and a cost to this, see the Registry documentation on this.

.co.za have always been behind in this, all international TLD's have had this policy in place for years now and I think it may even be in the ICANN Registry agreements.

The grace period fee is added to the redemption fee usually because technically your domain has to go back into the pool of domains not registered yet, but they wait for 3 months (I think)

People should start to realize South Africa has upgraded to international standards AT LAST. So there's no "leave my domain to ask me to renew for months on end and then renew it before it suspends" thing anymore

@AcidRaZor, agreed, if people want co.za to move in-line with international standards then they must take the good with the bad. Most people are just used to how the old Legacy system works and therefore forget or don't know how EPP works.

Personally I prefer the new EPP system

This is correct.

Though from my perspective because I sell domains I was not aware of this charge, and I can think of at least 5 times when I renewed a domain in its redemption period. Thank goodness for this thread or my ignorance would have carried on costing me :/

Ok so a bit of info,

We are transferring the domain away from JWC hosting to us however this is their message from support

Unfortunately the domain expired on 2013-08-10 and went into a redemption period. There's a redemption fee of R250 excluding the renewal fee of R65 to get the domain active again. I've sent you the invoice for the redemption and renewal. After receiving proof of payment we can renew your domain and update the name servers.

Please note that we do not impose the redemption penalty fee, .co.za changed to a new EPP system and they are enforcing this on all .co.za domains if it is not renewed within 10 days after expiry.

So its not true a redemption fee? Never heard of it so strange

We had to pay before they would even update nameservers before it takes the 5 days to transfer

the behaviour of my clients means i get shafted, maybe the legacy system is better, though more expensive.

Redemption period does exist. And they charge you a premium for it. If it's just a domain that you haven't utilized, then I'd let it expire and just buy it again after they dropped it. Was also hit by this redemption fee last month, but it was for a blog that's making money on "auto pilot", so I had to pay it.

The highest markup is 460% after a quick google search as of September 2019. For CO.ZA Redemption not accounting for VAT
Can anyone beat 460%
