So I have 2 websites that are .za.net domains. Is it worth moving them to .co.za? I mean...is there any advantage of having a co.za domain compared to .za.net? I assume spiders and the lot dont take preference over a .co.za domain compared to a .za.net domain?

Do both, capture the statistics, and then tell us your results.

I don't actually know, people tend to associate co.za with local web easier, and za.net seems more mystical?

co.za was originally intended for use/association for Commercial entities in SA and attracts an annual fee of R50.00 for renewal

za.net is FREE as in no annual cost, same as za.org and will do just as well in resolving your website interantionally.

It all comes down to perception, .com was all the rage until it became difficult to find available names and then filtered down to Country level domains such as co.uk, co.za etc

Google has no special taste for co.za over za.net, it will trawl them all :D

Ok kewl, thanks for the feedback thus far. I went for .za.net due to it being free, so thats the reason...but if there is no "gain" in having a co.za domain, then Im going to stick with .za.net ;)

To be honest, the biggest gain for your website visibility is the _content_

Compelling content presented in a easy to follow manner with SEO is what is going to make your site very _visible_ and popular, not the domain suffix :D

.za.net is already someone elses domain name basically, ie. www.za.net, just happens to be short one. So yes your za.net site will just be picked up as a subdomain of the za.net site. If you plan on doing anything commercial no-one will take your company seriously with a za.net because it means you can't shell out R50 for a co.za. For personal stuff and if you're not too interested in search engine traffic then za.net is fine.

agreed to an extent. yes G will crawl your site regardless of TLD or ccTLD BUT and here is a big butt. you have to remeber that G gives bias to certain domains. when .mobi/.info.biz etc were cheaper than a .com spammers used them up by the gallon, as result the gTLDs were devalued in the SERPs.

If this isn't a commercial interest stay on the za.net

HOWEVER

IF this is a commercial interest i highly recommend getting the .co.za, and migrating the sites over to the new domain. not forgetting to 301 your old sites content.

for the 50 tZAR it's costing you why risk domain squatting
