Coalition shift could give EFF metro

So glad I didn't vote for the DA this time round. At least I have a clean conscience in that I did not support a party that thinks it's a good idea to make politically expedient deals with a bunch of extremists whose stated intent is to forcibly seize everything I own and basically eradicate people like me from the continent.

Then who did you vote for?

You have a naive view of politics. If the DA could govern with a clear majority they would not give the EFF the time of day. The fact is at this current time they cannot. If they work with the EFF in the Free State and give them a taste of honey it may build enough co-operation that the somewhat delicate coalition in Gauteng remains intact for the foreseeable future.

I for one would gladly give the EFF a municipality in the Freestate with a still present DA in the background if it means the much more important metros in Gauteng stay in the hands of the DA. You have to look at the bigger picture. We want as much politics in opposition hands.

I don't think he really understands how politics works.
He seems naive about all of this.

My home cleaner has the best outlook on how to vote. She voted ACDP and I asked why them and not the ANC. She says "Our leader said that the devils number is 666. Mandalas number had 666 in it and he was ANC. I don't vote for a devil party."

Same superstitious crap as most of the ANC voters.

FF Plus mulls giving EFF the reins to a metro

The Freedom Front Plus stands in the way of the EFF seizing power in Metsimaholo‚ Free State‚ the first municipality in which the Red Berets would control a council.

"The reason why we [are] … hesitant to support the EFF is because we cannot support an organisation that does not have any respect for law and order‚ and the Constitution‚" said Wouter Wessels‚ FF Plus member of the Free State legislature.

However‚ parties said discussions were continuing and nothing had been decided.

The best possible thing that can happen is that the idiot vote gets split between two parties at one third each, while the informed third of the electorate can give a fighting chance to a third party.

^ This

And if they don't collaborate with these extremists they lose PTA and JHB and give it all back to the ANC.

^ and this

Realpolitik.
The likely thing is that the EFF does exactly the same as the ANC and loots the municipality, proving to the country that they are no better than the ANC.

This is where I hate coalition politics with a passion. 80% of the voters in Metsimaholo didn't vote for the EFF to run the place and now through horse trading they get stuck with them.

Dare I ask how many DA voters there would have voted DA if they knew the party would trade their votes for the EFF's in a metro somewhere?

This. I'm losing faith in the DA

I think you guys don't understand or correctly interpret "The enemy of my enemy is my friend"

There is a bigger picture.

The DA needed a coalition to take the WC. Some elections later they have a majority and don't need anyone's help. If the DA can do what it has done in the Cape with Jo'burg and Tshwane, then by the next round of elections they may have no need for a coalition.

There is a bigger picture.

Yes agreed. Some have taken a very short-sighted view of this. It is not a sprint, strategy is formulated years in advance. 5-year. 10-year. And longer. Clearly these strategies are paying off. If the DA failed to adapt while adopting long-term strategies, the DA would be in oblivion right now, instead of taking major metro's.

I think this was a smart move.

The EFF is very volatile and the last thing the DA wants to do is give the EFF the impression that they're just free votes to make the DA more powerful.

So giving up a munic in order to let the EFF feel like they're being rewarded for their "loyalty" is a wise move. Also, its not a major metropol and thereby it's also a testing ground to see how the EFF actually runs a munic.

What is the alternative?

The dominant party in the coalition runs things and stops horse trading to gain influence in other areas not related to the municipality

They are not handing anyone power. All municipal matters still require a majority council Yes vote to pass it. So the DA still controls the outcomes. They just give the Mayorship to an EFF candidate, but the Mayor doesn't have the power to do what they like. And don't worry, as soon as the revolutionary tastes the sweet sweet honey and sugar of a cushy mayor salary and benefits, they won't want to mess it up and P off the DA who can vote them out.

I do not think that is an option for the DA, sacrificing the capital and JHB is too high a price.

Personally, I would prefer a run-off election between the 2 main parties, that way the people decide who will represent them.

I agree a run off would be ideal. But yeah, for the foreseeable future, we're going to be stuck with coalitions
