Coconut Award - anyone?

But on a serious note, can see why people would be offended.
 
I've been in this school many years ago, this is an old thing already, why are people now suddenly crying about it? :confused: Back then it was a lot of laughter.

EDIT: All these 'awards' are clearly made in jest, people have just become too touchy and PC there days.
 
School principal Theo Boonzaaier told the newspaper the Coconut Award was based on a television programme (The Coconuts), which told the story of a white family which transformed into a black family.

I'm still wondering why being offended is such a big deal in today's society. I've been offended many times in my life and I never went to the newspaper or tried to make a big deal out of it. This world is already too politically correct for my liking.
 
The "Dark Knight" was awarded to the blackest pupil, and there was recognition for the "Gangster Wannabe" and the person with the most straightened hair, who was given the "GHD" [hair straightening machine] award

Clearly, in South Africa, one population group try to distance themselves as much as possible, from what nature made them to be. How sad. I wonder what the reason might be for this stupidity?

According to feedback from the students, it is only the previous generation that are stuck on offensive racist terms. They themselves don't see this in a derogatory context.

Maybe we should learn a lesson from them.

This is just silly, surely anyone can see that these awards are just fun awards for kids. The kid must regret telling his mother about this; honestly some people need lighten up.

I agree here. I mean, GHD award for the person with the most straightened hair? How the F U C K is that offensive?? Yeah, people need to lighten up. These awards were there even when I was in that school. I cannot even recall what they were back then.
 
Good to see the next generation can joke about these things :)

Gives me hope for the future.
