COCT's green electricity certificates

I read through GEC's Explained, but actually can't work out what the benefit to the consumer (or anyone else besides the Darling Wind Farm and the COCT) is here.

The certificates are not redeemable, transferable, or off-set against one's electricity account. There is also no indication that they will off-set any kind of carbon emission taxes for ZA as a whole.

They cost 25c a KWH.

Would anyone care to enlighten me? I have clearly missed something.

As per their page -

Buying Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) transfers the right to claim the benefits of the green electricity from the City to the buyer. You can claim to have consumed green electricity if the amount of units of Green Electricity Certificates that you buy is equivalent to or exceeds the amount of normal electricity consumed by the facility or process for which the claim is made.

Better off investing in solar panels and actually being "green", rather than just rather dubiously imho claiming to be.

Yes, that's what I thought, thanks for reading through it. My inverter tells me I have saved pumping 2.6T of CO2 into the atmosphere and produced 5MWH of clean electricity since install. Now that makes for a good green feeling.
